Lifta لفتا📍

Last week we joined with Umar Al-Ghubari of Zochrot for a tour of Lifta, a village that since antiquity has acted as an opening to Jerusalem and whose Palestinian residents were expelled in 1948. We learned about the vibrant life of the village and visited it's still visible mosque, olive press, and villas.

Ein Karem, where John the Baptist is believed to have been born, is known today for it's boutique hotels and cafes. Featured below is a map of the village created by the families of residents of Ein Karem who were expelled to Jordan in 1948. It depicts the Arabic place names and streets of the village.

This week we visited Beit Ummar in Area B of the occupied West Bank. The olive tree below is said to be over 1,000 years old by locals and represents their rootedness and their resilience despite recent military raids and road closures.

Join the Green Olive Collective with Extend and Benzion Sanders to discuss how his experience serving in the Israeli military in 2014 in the Gaza Strip motivated him to become an activist against the occupation.

Benzion is a veteran of the IDF whose time in the army convinced him that the violence of military rule must end. He will speak about how his experience in Operation Protective Edge helped him realize that Israeli policies of siege, closure, bombardment, and ground invasion have not brought anyone closer to a future of dignity and security.

It is rare for any of us to have any firsthand experience in the Gaza Strip. Here is a recording of our "Virtual Tour of the Gaza Strip" from September for those looking for a more grounded glimpse of life in Gaza since the closure in 2007.

We used virtual technology to cross the militarized border zone, visit major historical sites, and imagine a future in which freedom of movement will be guaranteed to all residents of the Gaza Strip. While this tour was given before October, we hope it helps remind people that Gazans are not numbers and deserve to live full lives with dignity and respect.
