DUST ARRIVES ON MAINLAND PORTUGAL
This morning we began to see the first effects of the dust that has been forecast over the last week. With the arrival of dust, the sky may take on a whitish or yellowish appearance, in addition to orange hues at sunset and sunrise.
The particles usually remain in the higher layers of the atmosphere, but can descend to lower levels depending on the concentration.
THIS EVENING
There is still a possibility that the dust will mix with the rain forecast for the end of Tuesday on the continent, which could cause the phenomenon known as "dust rain ".(IPMA). The dust is forecast ti intensify tomorrow.
NOTE: Radar images at 1600 hrs show “very light” rain showers just to the south of the Algarve, but these have remained virtually in the same position over the last few hours – no rain registered on mainland since early this morning according to IPMA
HEALTH
The DGS (Directorate-General of Health) informs that the particles, called PM10, are very small and can cause irritation to the eyes, nose and throat, coughing and worsening of respiratory diseases.
Although the predicted concentrations are not considered dangerous for the general population, children, the elderly, and people with respiratory or cardiovascular diseases may experience discomfort.
The recommendation is to avoid prolonged outdoor physical activity, reduce exposure to cigarette smoke, and, whenever possible, remain indoors during periods of higher dust levels.
People with chronic illnesses should maintain their usual treatments and seek medical attention if their symptoms worsen.
According to the Directorate-General of Health (DGS), episodes like this are more common in spring and summer, when high temperatures in North Africa favour winds capable of lifting large quantities of soil particles and transporting them over long distances.
