"XVIII Medieval Fair of Silves
The Mosque, Symbol, and Power"

The Medieval Fair returns to the city of Silves from August 10th to August 20th, with 11 days of reenacting the experiences of the ancient capital of the province that today corresponds to the Algarve, the splendid Xilb (Silves). With the central theme "The Mosque, Symbol, and Power," it will reveal the history of the construction and consecration of the mosque as a place of worship and symbolic expression of the new religion during the early stages of the Islamization of a territory that would become one of the major political and cultural centers of Gharb al-Andalus.
In the city, you will once again hear the sermon by the voice of the Imam; the Vizier will welcome all who visit us, and the call to prayer will echo from the tall minaret by the Al-Muezzin. These will be days of infectious celebration, enlivened by the vendors' calls, the sound of music, and the vibrant dances inspired by memories of the Orient.
The mystical atmosphere of the Medieval Fair begins daily at 6:00 PM with the Medieval Procession, where participants dressed in elaborate costumes will parade through the streets of the Medina and the Outskirts. Those fond of competitions can witness the War Games, where a rebel who has taken possession of the territory, Yahyâ Ibn Bakr Ibn Zadlaf, will confront the Umayyad army at 8:00 PM and 10:30 PM in Al-Mut’amid Square. Additionally, there will be Nights of the Orient, a stunning display of music, dance, and fire, taking place at 10:30 PM at Silves Castle.
