𝐋𝐞𝐭'𝐬 𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭! 𝐀𝐥𝐛𝐮𝐟𝐞𝐢𝐫𝐚 𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐬!
Yes, I am aware of some of the downsides of Albufeira, but the same can be said about almost anywhere. From time to time, I like to speak up for a fairer and more balanced judgment.
Sure, videos of drunk people behaving badly at 3 a.m. on the Strip get far more attention. But the truth is that what people see on social media is never the whole picture. Bad news sells a thousand times better than good news, and many page owners know exactly what kind of content generates clicks, views, comments, and engagement.
I know this because I also run a monetized page. If I shared nothing but controversy, negativity, and sensational stories, I would make far more money for sure. But I still have values and principles. I believe people deserve to see the full picture, not just the parts that attract the most attention.
Some people are always quick to criticize Albufeira, but they rarely mention the many positive things happening in the city. Albufeira has the largest sporting community in the Algarve region, with more athletes and federated sports participants than any other municipality. Many of them are young athletes competing across a wide range of sports, and the city regularly hosts major sporting events that attract participants from all over the country.
This weekend, the Albufeira Municipal Stadium hosted the 43rd National Youth Olympic Tournament, bringing together hundreds of under 18 and under 16 athletes representing district associations from across Portugal. Organized by the Portuguese Athletics Federation in partnership with the Algarve Athletics Association and the Municipality of Albufeira, the event featured some of the most promising young talents in Portuguese athletics.
I live next to the stadium, and I was genuinely happy to hear the noise of sport, competition, and excitement throughout the weekend. It was refreshing to hear the voices of young people, their families, coaches, and supporters enjoying themselves and creating such a positive atmosphere. For an entire weekend, the area was filled with energy, enthusiasm, and healthy competition.
These are also the realities of Albufeira. They may not generate as many clicks as a video of someone falling out of a bar at 3 a.m., but they are just as real, and in my opinion, far more representative of the values that help build a strong community.
Sometimes the good stories deserve a little attention too. Dont't you think?
