More than 74,000 foreign nationals applied for Portuguese nationality in 2019.
18,433 Israelis actually acquired Portuguese nationality. This is much higher than SEF expected.
According to the Immigration, Borders and Asylum Report (RIFA) presented this Tuesday, the 74,000 foreign citizens who applied for Portuguese nationality last year, represents the highest figure in the last five years. Brazilian nationality leads the top with the highest number of orders.
The 2019 RIFA, released on the occasion of the 44th anniversary of the Foreigners and Borders Service (SEF), states that 74,116 requests for the acquisition of Portuguese nationality were registered, with “a significant increase compared to the same period (2018) 79.4%”.
The report states that SEF issued 70,529 opinions, 68,116 of which were positive and 2,413 negatives.
According to the document, those who most acquired Portuguese nationality in 2019 were those from Brazil (22,928), Israel (18,433), Cape Verde (6,472), Angola (2,993), Ukraine (2,738), Guinea-Bissau (2,538) and Turkey (1,629).
"The sharp growth in requests for citizenship from citizens of Israel and Turkey, will be associated with the publication of the addition to the 2015 Portuguese Nationality Regulation, regarding the naturalization of foreigners who are descendants of Portuguese Sephardic Jews", the document reads.
SEF stresses that most requests for acquisition of Portuguese nationality are related to naturalization (68.9%), followed by marriage and de facto union (13.3%) and original attribution (11%).
Regarding the acquisition of nationality due to the desire for marriage or de facto union, SEF stresses that applications are submitted by nationals of Brazil (5,215), Venezuela (709), Angola (610), Cape Verde (599) and Ukraine (337).
The RIFA also indicates that, in these types of cases, there are a large number of foreign citizens who, not being residents of Portugal, apply for nationality at the Portuguese Embassies and Consulates in the area ofresidence.
In this area, SEF issued 9,270 opinions, 9,199 of which were positive and 71 negatives.
