St Anthony’s Celebrations
Month of June is just right around the corner and in Lisbon that means: St. Anthony’s celebrations! It’s a big party month on the city and special atmosphere!
Celebrations will start June 1st until June 30th. The biggest days are June 12th and 13th (St. Anthony’s day).
Wondering what happens in the city? Like any good Portuguese celebration: food, drinks, music and fun!
Neighbourhoods like Alfama, Mouraria, Bica, Graça, Madragoa will held most of the “arraiais” that are no less than street parties with food, drinks and live traditional popular music.
These arraiais probably won’t be happening everyday - mostly weekends and June 12th, and more from the 1st to 12th - but all throughout the month you will be able to have at least a bit of the experience by eating grilled sardines outside, in a special setting.
On the 12th there will be the St Anthony’s Weddings and the Parade down the Av. Liberdade where all the neighbourhood will compete for the best performance.
However, during the biggest days of party neighbourhoods where there will be Arraiais will be busier than usual, and during weekends and on the 12th there can be noise until later in the night. So if you are looking for a quiet place to stay some parts of Alfama,Mouraria, Bica, Graça probably won’t be the best place to stay!
If you arrive later in the evening of 12th can be harder to navigate through some parts of Alfama, for example!
It’s a great time to be in Lisbon to experience the city’s vibrant atmosphere and for sure having a different experience!
We definitely recommend that if you are staying in Lisbon in June, to stop by and check it out, have some sardines and dance to Portuguese popular music!
If you are staying in one of those busier neighbourhoods, some patience might be needed in some of the days…bring your good mood and if you cannot beat them, just join them! 😉
