🟡As of 8 August 2026, Spain has announced temporary border controls for people arriving from Italy by air and sea, starting at midnight on 8 August and currently planned to continue until 7 September 2026. Travelers will have their passports, nationality and visa/residence documents checked.

🟡🇪🇸🇮🇹 What this means

* ✅ Spain is temporarily reintroducing border checks on flights and ships arriving from Italy.
* 🇪🇺 This is connected to the current dispute between Spain and Italy over migration and the Schengen rules.
* 🇮🇹 Italy had already introduced similar checks on travelers coming from Spain.
* The Spanish measures are currently announced for 8 August–7 September 2026.

🟡AIMA to Automatically Issue Social Security Numbers to Immigrants

Portugal is introducing a significant change designed to reduce bureaucracy for immigrants dealing with AIMA.

🟡From the end of July, immigrants who attend AIMA to begin a regularisation process will be able to receive their Portuguese Social Security Identification Number, known as the NISS, automatically during the process.

🟡Until now, applicants who did not already have a NISS often needed to make a separate request through Segurança Social. This could involve additional appointments, travel and delays while waiting for the number to be issued.

🟡Under the new system, AIMA and Segurança Social will be digitally connected. AIMA will enter the applicant’s identification details, and Segurança Social will issue the NISS in real time, without the person needing to visit a separate Social Security office.

✅Why is this important?

🟡The NISS is used to identify people within Portugal’s Social Security system. It is normally required for employment, Social Security contributions and access to certain benefits and protections.

The scale of the existing problem is considerable. In 2025, approximately 250,000 people reportedly visited Social Security offices specifically to request a NISS, with many having to return again later to collect it.

🟡The new system should:

• Reduce unnecessary visits to Segurança Social offices
• Make some AIMA procedures faster and more straightforward
• Ensure the NISS is connected directly to the applicant’s immigration record
• Reduce pressure on face-to-face public services

✅Who will benefit?

🟡The announcement specifically refers to immigrants who attend AIMA to begin or complete a regularisation process and who do not already have a NISS.

🟡It does not appear to mean that every foreign resident in Portugal will automatically receive a NISS without taking any action. The number will be generated as part of the relevant AIMA procedure.

🟡Anyone who already has a NISS should continue using their existing number. A new number should not be requested.

🟡 This is a welcome step towards better coordination between Portuguese public services and could remove one of the additional administrative hurdles faced by people completing their residency procedures.

🟡The system is expected to begin operating at the end of July 2026.

🟡The key limitation is worth retaining: this applies during relevant AIMA regularisation procedures, rather than automatically assigning a NISS to every immigrant in Portugal.

🟡The "Burca Law" prohibits face concealing in public spaces, allegedly for safety and public order reasons. The proposal of the Chega party has been approved in the specialty of the Portuguese Parliament, awaiting publication in Diário da República. The approved text states: "It is prohibited to use any piece of clothing or accessory intended to conceal, cover or camouflage the face in public spaces, making it impossible to identify citizens' visual or facial identification. "
🟡The text prohibits the use of any accessory that hides the face: sunglasses, helmets, medical masks and ornaments are included in the literal reading of the text. Can we walk on the public road with sunglasses and a medical mask? According to this law NOPE! Eventually we will see if the concern for public safety will apply equally to all accessories that hide the face, or only Islamic clothing.

👉🏽Let's analyze now the supposed motivation for this law: Banning the burqa and the Islamic veil improves public safety? FALSE!
🟡There is no record of crimes in Portugal where criminals use Islamic clothing to hide their identity. The law banning holes and Islamic veil offers a solution to a problem that doesn't exist.
No honeymooners, resolute in their criminal conviction, will think: "Damn! I wanted to kill and steal but I'm giving up because the law doesn't allow me to cover my face. The criminal is willing to break the law. Not making another law that will deter him.
🟡If this law has any impact, it is feeding Islamophobia, increasing distrust and resentment, and this is counterproductive to security, directly translating to violence against Muslim people and, in the long run, to radicalization of Islamic communities against societies that marginalize them.
If this law changes public safety, it will be for the worse.
