Percorrer a casa museu de 1834, descer às adegas onde dormem moscatéis com mais de cem anos, provar o Periquita onde ele nasceu e almoçar no Wine Corner. Assim se passa um dia na José Maria da Fonseca.

Em Vila Nogueira de Azeitão, a trinta minutos de Lisboa, está a mais antiga casa portuguesa de vinhos de mesa. Foi fundada em 1834 e continua na mesma família, agora na sétima geração.

Daqui saiu o Periquita, lançado em 1850, e daqui sai o Moscatel de Setúbal, marca da casa desde 1849. Na Adega dos Teares Velhos repousam moscatéis com mais de um século, ainda em barrica.

A casa recebe visitantes para provas comentadas, provas de moscatéis especiais, workshops de blending e de pintura com vinho, e refeições de petiscos.

O Wine Corner, o restaurante da casa, serve cozinha tradicional portuguesa acompanhada exclusivamente com os vinhos da José Maria da Fonseca.

Walking through the 1834 manor house museum, going down to the cellars where hundred year old Moscatéis rest, tasting Periquita where it was born and having lunch at the Wine Corner. That is how a day passes at José Maria da Fonseca.

In Vila Nogueira de Azeitão, thirty minutes from Lisbon, stands the oldest Portuguese table wine house. It was founded in 1834 and is still run by the same family, now in its seventh generation.

Periquita came from here, launched in 1850, and so does Moscatel de Setúbal, a house brand since 1849. In the Adega dos Teares Velhos, Moscatéis more than a century old still rest in cask.

The estate welcomes visitors for guided tastings, tastings of special Moscatéis, blending and wine painting workshops, and petiscos meals.

The Wine Corner, the estate's own restaurant, serves traditional Portuguese cooking paired exclusively with José Maria da Fonseca wines.

Hoje é o Dia Internacional do Vinho do Porto. A data assinala o 10 de setembro de 1756, quando o Marquês de Pombal criou a Companhia Geral da Agricultura das Vinhas do Alto Douro e demarcou o Douro, a mais antiga região vitivinícola regulamentada do mundo.

Foi a primeira vez que um território foi delimitado para proteger a origem e a qualidade de um vinho. O modelo que nasceu aqui é o mesmo que hoje sustenta todas as denominações de origem do mundo, de Bordéus a Champanhe.

A demarcação fez-se entre 1758 e 1761, com 335 marcos de granito espalhados pelas encostas. Muitos foram levados a lombo de b***o até ao alto dos socalcos. Vários continuam lá, no mesmo sítio, ao fim de mais de duzentos e cinquenta anos.

O Douro foi demarcado vinte anos antes de os Estados Unidos existirem, e é hoje Património Mundial da UNESCO. O Dia do Vinho do Porto foi instituído em 2014 pelo Instituto dos Vinhos do Douro e do Porto.

Today is the International Port Wine Day. The date marks 10 September 1756, when the Marquis of Pombal created the General Company of Agriculture of the Vineyards of the Alto Douro and demarcated the Douro, the oldest regulated wine region in the world.

It was the first time a territory had been mapped out to protect the origin and quality of a wine. The model born here is the same one that underpins every appellation of origin in the world today, from Bordeaux to Champagne.

The demarcation took place between 1758 and 1761, with 335 granite markers set across the slopes. Many were carried up to the top of the terraces on the backs of donkeys. Several are still there, in the same spot, more than two hundred and fifty years on.

The Douro was demarcated twenty years before the United States existed, and it is today a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Port Wine Day itself was established in 2014 by the Douro and Port Wine Institute.

Trocar a cidade por vinhas em menos de uma hora, conhecer três adegas diferentes, provar do Arinto ao Castelão e ver a serra de Montejunto de todos os ângulos. Assim se passa um dia no Lisboa Premium Wine Tour.

A menos de uma hora do centro da capital começa a região vitivinícola com mais denominações de origem do país. São nove no total, mais do que qualquer outra região portuguesa.

Este programa segue para a zona central, entre Torres Vedras e Alenquer, onde se concentra a maior parte da produção. Vinhas protegidas dos ventos atlânticos pela serra de Montejunto, com castas como Arinto, Castelão e Tinta Miúda.

Swapping the city for vineyards in under an hour, visiting three different wineries, tasting from Arinto to Castelão and seeing the Montejunto hills from every angle. That is how a day passes on the Lisboa Premium Wine Tour.

Less than an hour from the city centre begins the Portuguese wine region with the most denominations of origin in the country. Nine in total, more than any other region in Portugal.

This programme heads for the central area, between Torres Vedras and Alenquer, where most of the production is concentrated. Vineyards sheltered from Atlantic winds by the Montejunto hills, with varieties such as Arinto, Castelão and Tinta Miúda.

Participe na produção de um grande vinho português.

Durante algumas semanas por ano, as adegas abrem as portas a quem quiser vindimar. Corta-se o cacho, enche-se o cesto, pisa-se no lagar. E o vinho que nasce dessas semanas leva o trabalho de quem lá esteve.

Começa cedo, com as uvas ainda frias da noite. Aprende-se a distinguir o cacho que entra do que f**a, sobe-se e desce-se o socalco com o peso às costas, e sente-se o cheiro do mosto a chegar da adega. Ao fim do dia, em várias quintas parceiras, é o pé descalço no granito que faz o resto, com música a marcar o compasso e a mesa posta à espera.

Daqui a dois anos, aquele vinho estará numa garrafa com um ano de colheita. E terá passado pelas suas mãos.

As vindimas em Portugal decorrem de agosto a outubro, do Alentejo aos socalcos do Douro.

Take part in the making of a great Portuguese wine.

For a few weeks each year, the wineries open their doors to anyone willing to work the vindimas. You cut the bunch, fill the basket, tread in the lagar. And the wine born from those weeks carries the work of everyone who was there.

It starts early, with the grapes still cold from the night. You learn to tell the bunch that goes in from the one that stays, you climb and descend the terraces with the weight on your back, and you catch the smell of must drifting from the cellar. At the end of the day, at several partner estates, it is bare feet on granite that do the rest, with music keeping time and the table already set.

Two years from now, that wine will be in a bottle with a vintage on it. And it will have passed through your hands.

The harvest in Portugal runs from August to October, from the Alentejo to the terraces of the Douro.

Nos Açores, cada vinha cresce dentro de um curral de pedra vulcânica com mais de quinhentos anos.

Foi entre o basalto e o Atlântico que, ainda no século XV, os primeiros colonos começaram a plantar vinha. Para a proteger dos ventos salgados do mar, construíram muros baixos de pedra que abrigam cada cepa e, à noite, devolvem às raízes o calor acumulado durante o dia.

A Paisagem da Cultura da Vinha do Pico é hoje Património Mundial da UNESCO. E as castas que aqui crescem, Verdelho, Arinto dos Açores e Terrantez do Pico, não existem em mais lado nenhum. São vinhos com salinidade viva, acidez marcada, e uma mineralidade rara nos brancos europeus.

Nos séculos XVIII e XIX, o Verdelho dos Açores era servido nas cortes da Rússia dos Czares. Hoje, os brancos açorianos voltaram ao topo mundial.

In the Azores, every vine grows inside a curral of volcanic stone more than five hundred years old.

It was between the basalt and the Atlantic that, in the fifteenth century, the first settlers began planting vines. To protect them from the salty winds of the sea, they built low stone walls that shelter each vine and, at night, return to the roots the heat absorbed during the day.

The Landscape of the Pico Island Vineyard Culture is today a UNESCO World Heritage Site. And the grape varieties that grow here, Verdelho, Arinto dos Açores and Terrantez do Pico, exist nowhere else in the world. These are wines with vivid salinity, striking acidity, and a mineral character rarely found in European whites.

In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Verdelho from the Azores was served at the courts of the Russian Tsars. Today, Azorean whites have returned to the top of the wine world.

Em Igrejinha, no concelho de Arraiolos, uma herdade de 800 hectares desenha os seus vinhos como quem borda um tapete.

A Tapada de Coelheiros tem raízes históricas em 1467, mas foi nos anos 90 que se transformou numa das referências vínicas do Alentejo. Aqui, cada uma das sete pequenas parcelas de vinha é como um ponto de bordado. Todas trabalhadas em separado, ponto por ponto, num mosaico onde as castas nacionais convivem com Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay e Syrah.

A herdade não é só vinha. Nos 800 hectares há também 40 hectares de nogueiras, montado com ovelhas, veados e gamos em estado selvagem, e uma filosofia de intervenção mínima que tenta preservar o modelo do Alentejo de há cem anos, quando as herdades eram um mosaico de culturas.

Uma paisagem que se lê como um tapete, com o Alentejo a preparar-se para as vindimas.

In Igrejinha, in the municipality of Arraiolos, an 800 hectare estate weaves its wines the way one embroiders a tapestry.

Tapada de Coelheiros traces its history back to 1467, but it was in the 1990s that it became one of the leading names in Alentejo winemaking. Here, each of the seven small vineyard parcels is like a stitch. All of them worked separately, point by point, in a mosaic where native varieties meet Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Syrah.

The estate is more than vineyard. Across the 800 hectares there are also 40 hectares of walnut trees, montado with sheep, deer and fallow deer roaming freely, and a philosophy of minimal intervention that seeks to preserve the model of the Alentejo of a hundred years ago, when herdades were a mosaic of cultures.

A landscape that reads like a tapestry, with the Alentejo preparing itself for the harvest.

No Alqueva, o maior plano de água artificial da Europa, o barco parte ao final da tarde e acompanha o sol até ele se pôr sobre o lago. Pelo caminho contornam-se ilhas e braços do Guadiana, enquanto o guia conta a história da barragem e do território que ela transformou.

A bordo prova-se um Antão Vaz, a casta branca que melhor traduz o Alentejo, servido fresco com pão alentejano e azeitonas. Em dias de calor, há ainda tempo para um mergulho.

Em agosto, o Alentejo entra na contagem decrescente para as vindimas. Até lá, o lago continua a ser o melhor sítio para acabar o dia.

Taste the Alentejo by boat.

On Alqueva, the largest artificial body of water in Europe, the boat sets off in the late afternoon and follows the sun until it sets over the lake. Along the way you round islands and arms of the Guadiana, while the guide tells the story of the dam and the territory it reshaped.

On board you taste an Antão Vaz, the white casta that best expresses the Alentejo, served chilled with pão alentejano and olives. On warm days there is still time for a swim.

In August the Alentejo begins its countdown to the vindimas. Until then, the lake remains the best place to end the day.

Entre os rios Cávado e Homem, a poucos quilómetros do Parque Nacional Peneda-Gerês, o vinho verde nasce numa casa de família.

Em Amares, no coração do Minho, a Casa Lata é uma antiga quinta minhota que a mesma família recuperou e devolveu à terra. Numa parte da casa mantêm-se, no lugar original, a prensa de pedra e o alambique que serviram gerações. Ao lado, uma adega contemporânea acolhe a viticultura de hoje, feita em 3,6 hectares plantados entre os dois rios.

Aqui nascem os vinhos Terras de Amares, elaborados exclusivamente com castas autóctones da região, num equilíbrio entre a frescura atlântica e a mineralidade granítica do Minho.

Nas vinhas em ramada, nas provas ao ar livre, nos piqueniques à sombra, sente-se a cadência de um Minho que se vive devagar.

Between the rivers Cávado and Homem, a few kilometres from Peneda-Gerês National Park, Vinho Verde is born in a family home.

In Amares, at the heart of Minho, Casa Lata is an old Minho farmhouse that the same family restored and returned to the land. In one part of the house, the original stone press and still remain in their place, having served generations. Beside them, a contemporary winery welcomes today's winemaking, drawn from 3.6 hectares planted between the two rivers.

This is where the Terras de Amares wines are born, made exclusively from indigenous grape varieties of the region, balancing Atlantic freshness with the granite minerality of Minho.

In the vines trained overhead, in tastings outdoors, in picnics under the trees, one feels the pace of a Minho lived slowly.
