The trail empties out in September.
Same Alentejo path everyone dreams about all summer, but by 7am the air is noticeably kinder. On a self-guided PNT itinerary, that morning is entirely yours to keep or reroute as the day suggests.
Portugal's shoulder season is our favorite season.
Have you ever hiked or cycled here outside of summer? Tell us!

Tap water in Portugal is safe to drink, in cities, in villages, along most of the trail. It changes how you pack for a summer walk, a reusable bottle is enough, no need to carry extra or go looking for bottled water.

The Fisherman's Trail runs along the cliffs above it, and walking it turns this beach into just one stop among several, on a seven-day self-guided route along the Rota Vicentina coast.

Would you rather park at one beach, or walk to five?

Start at 7am. Break for three hours when the sun is highest. Finish the last stretch as the light softens.

That's how our self-guided travelers move through Portugal in August, at their own pace, on their own schedule. No fixed departure time to catch, no guide checking a watch, just your morning and your afternoon, arranged the way you want them.

How do you handle the heat when you're exploring somewhere new in summer?

More women over fifty are choosing to hike Portugal alone this year than ever before, on their own terms: unhurried mornings, a route already scouted, the freedom to stop wherever the light is good.

Tonight, the sky over our hills goes briefly dark. It's the first total solar eclipse over mainland Europe since 1999, and the highlands of Trás-os-Montes sit inside its narrow path.

Your luggage arrives before you do. The routes are tested, GPS-tracked, and boutique accommodation is already sorted, with a support team one call away if you need them.

What's left to carry for the day is whatever fits in a daypack, a rain layer, a camera, and something to snack on. The rest is already where it needs to be.

If you're trying to avoid the heat this July, the Alentejo and the Douro are not where you want to be. The Atlantic keeps the coast noticeably milder, which makes it one of the better calls for hiking or cycling right now, and the water is warm enough that a swim afterwards isn't a bad idea either.

Curious where that is?

“We have been biking in Europe for the last dozen years. Last night we unanimously agreed that Portugal was the prettiest path we have ever taken.”

This is the kind of message that stays with us.

Have you cycled in Portugal? We’d love to hear your story.
