PR1 – Pico do Areeiro Trail to Fully Reopen on June 26
The Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN) has announced that the PR1 – Vereda do Pico do Areeiro trail will fully reopen to the public on June 26, with unrestricted access and no calendar limitations.
Until then, the current operating schedule will remain in effect while improvement works are finalized. As such, the trail will remain closed from Monday to Thursday and open on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays through June 25.
From June 26 onward, visitors will be able to access the route daily. The existing one-way traffic system between Pico do Areeiro and Pico Ruivo will remain in place as part of the management and safety measures introduced following the landslide that affected the area.
IFCN has also advised that a temporary closure will be required in September to allow for the installation of a walkway in one of the sections currently under intervention. The trail will therefore be closed on September 14, 15, 16, and 17, as well as on September 21 and 22.
Once this work is completed, PR1 will return to normal operation without further interruptions, as the remaining works can be carried out while the trail remains open to visitors.
Visitors are reminded that access to PR1 continues to require mandatory advance registration through the Simplifica platform. Reservations for the newly available periods can be made starting June 1.
These measures will allow the completion of ongoing improvements while enhancing the safety and quality of the trail, ensuring continued access for both residents and visitors to one of Madeira’s most iconic hiking routes.
