🇬🇧 Last week we had the opportunity to witness the largest group of Iberian orcas (Orcinus orca) we have ever seen (around 20 animals).
It was an epic afternoon🙌
We were in the right place at the right time to witness a spectacle of nature.

Foi uma tarde épica.

🇬🇧 During Ecomarine Algarve tours, we were lucky to spot false killer whales in Faro during Easter week — a rare and unforgettable experience!

Pseudorca crassidens (False killer whale)

The false killer whale is a cetacean belonging to the oceanic dolphin family (Delphinidae), reaching lengths of 5 to 6 meters and weighing up to 1,500 kg.
Despite its name, it is not a true orca. It has a dark, streamlined body, a tall, curved dorsal fin, and a less prominent beak compared to other dolphins.
It is found in tropical and temperate oceans across much of the world.

Highly sociable, it tends to live in large groups and often interacts with other dolphin species, with rare cases of adopting calves from different species.
These whales are known for leaping out of the water and riding the bow waves of boats. Their diet mainly consists of squid and fish, though they may also prey on other cetaceans in some cases.
🇵🇹 Durante os passeios da Ecomarine Algarve, tivemos a sorte de observar falsas orcas em Faro na semana da Páscoa — um momento raro e inesquecível!

Pseudorca crassidens (Falsa orca)

A falsa orca é um cetáceo pertencente à família dos golfinhos oceânicos (Delphinidae), podendo atingir entre 5 e 6 metros de comprimento e pesar até 1.500 kg. Apesar do nome, não é uma orca verdadeira.
Tem o corpo escuro e alongado, com uma barbatana dorsal alta e curva, e um bico menos pronunciado do que o de outros golfinhos.
Distribui-se por oceanos tropicais e temperados em várias partes do mundo.

Extremamente sociável, costuma formar grandes grupos e interagir com outras espécies de golfinhos, havendo casos raros em que adota crias que não são da sua espécie.
É comum vê-la saltar fora de água e acompanhar barcos em movimento (bow riding).
A sua alimentação inclui lulas e peixes, podendo também atacar outros cetáceos em certas situações.

🇬🇧 🌿🪿 On our last nature tours we observed a less common bird in the Ria Formosa Natural Park, we saw this great egret (Ardea alba) feeding in the marshland area. .🇵🇹 🌿🪿Nos nossos últimos tours de natureza observámos uma ave menos comum no Parque Natural da Ria Formosa, vimos esta garça-branca-grande (Ardea alba) a alimentar-se na zona do sapal.

🇬🇧 🌱🐦‍⬛On May 1st, during our nature excursion, we were delighted to spot numerous bird species.
However, the highlight of the day was undoubtedly the Avocets (Recurvirostra avosetta), a species not commonly seen in the Ria Formosa wetlands.
Typically found in the saltpans of the area, encountering them was a delightful surprise.
🇵🇹 🌱🐦‍⬛No dia 1º de maio, durante nossa excursão pela natureza, ficamos encantados ao avistar várias espécies de aves. No entanto, o destaque do dia foi, sem dúvida, os Alfaites (Recurvirostra avosetta), uma espécie menos de sapal da Ria Formosa. Geralmente encontrados na área das salinas, encontrá-los foi uma surpresa encantadora.

Em Faro, a cidade velha e a proximidade com a Ria Formosa proporcionam um ambiente propício para essas aves, tornando sua presença uma parte familiar do cenário local.
A adaptação das cegonhas a ambientes urbanos destaca a coexistência harmoniosa entre a vida selvagem e a comunidade humana em Faro.
🇬🇧🌍🌿 Storks are migratory birds that often choose urban locations, such as tall buildings and towers, to build their nests.
In Faro, the old city and the proximity to Ria Formosa provide a conducive environment for these birds, making their presence a familiar part of the local scenery.
The adaptation of storks to urban environments highlights the harmonious coexistence between wildlife and the human community in Faro.
🇨🇵🌍🌿 Les cigognes sont des oiseaux migrateurs qui choisissent souvent des emplacements urbains, tels que des bâtiments élevés et des tours, pour construire leurs nids.

O projeto Farol passou na reportagem especial "Alerta Orca" da SIC.

O principal objetivo deste projeto é fazer uma estimativa da abundância de cetáceos na costa do Algarve, mas, devido às suas características, pode também contribuir para reduzir o número de interações entre as orcas e os veleiros.

Foi isso que o nosso investigador Rui Peres dos Santos, do grupo R2C2 (Recursos, Restauração, Conectividade e Clima), apresentou nesta reportagem.

Este projeto só é possível devido ao apoio da Autoridade Marítima Nacional, da Ocean Vibes, das empresas de Transportes do Guadiana e Guerreiro e Guadiana, da Ecomarine Algarve, da RAAlg-Rede de Arrojamentos do Algarve, dos CP - Comboios de Portugal e de muitos voluntários.

🇬🇧🐦‍⬛🦅🐦During this week, truly fascinating sightings occurred during Ecomarine Algarve's nature tours, which took place in the incredible setting of Ria Formosa Natural Park 🌿🌍 It was a week filled with surprises, where nature revealed itself in all its splendor.
Among the memorable moments, the observation of a Grey Heron in an unusual posture, basking in the warm rays of the sun to warm up, stood out.
It was an extraordinary view of the natural elegance of these birds.
Furthermore, a juvenile Northern Gannet was spotted resting peacefully in the calm waters of the Ria.
And let's not forget the majestic Flamingos that approached Faro's main navigation channel, providing a spectacle of color and grace.
The sight of these pink birds in their natural habitat is truly inspiring.
🇵🇹🐦‍⬛🦅🐦Durante esta semana, ocorreram avistamentos verdadeiramente fascinantes durante os passeios de natureza da Ecomarine Algarve, realizados no incrível cenário do🌿🌍 Parque Natural da Ria Formosa
Foi uma semana repleta de surpresas, onde a natureza se revelou em todo o seu esplendor. Entre os momentos memoráveis, destacou-se a observação de uma Garça-real em uma postura incomum, aproveitando os raios quentes do sol para se aquecer.
Foi uma visão extraordinária da elegância natural dessas aves.
Além disso, um Ganso-patolas juvenil foi avistado repousando serenamente nas águas calmas da Ria.
Não podemos esquecer dos majestosos Flamingos que se aproximaram do canal principal de navegação de Faro, proporcionando um espetáculo de cor e graça. A visão dessas aves rosadas em seu habitat natural é verdadeiramente inspiradora.

September 2023 has been truly spectacular for Ecomarine Algarve's marine life tours.
Our customers have had the incredible opportunity to spot several impressive species throughout this period.

One of the stars of this month was the Fin whales, also known as (Baleoptera Physalus) spotted last week.
The majesty of these creatures in their natural habitat is always an exciting spectacle for our visitors.
Additionally, the Humpback whale, or (Megaptera novaeangliae) also made an appearance, Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), Common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) and Harbour porpoises, or (Phocoena phocoena), were also spotted, adding even more variety to the marine life spectacle.

We were fortunate to have good weather conditions throughout the month. Even now, with swell and easterly winds, we continue to organize exciting tours starting from next week. We still have some slots available for those who wish to join us and witness firsthand the beauty and magic of the waters of the Algarve.

Setembro de 2023 foi verdadeiramente espetacular para os passeios de vida marinha da Ecomarine Algarve. Os nossos clientes tiveram a incrível oportunidade de avistar várias espécies impressionantes ao longo deste período.

Uma das estrelas deste mês foram as baleias comuns, também conhecidas como (Baleoptera Physalia), avistadas na semana passada.
Tivemos também a visita de uma baleia de bossa ou (Megaptera novaeangliae), assim como os Golfinhos-roazes (Tursiops truncatus), golfinhos-comuns (Delphinus delphis) e Botos, ou (Phocoena phocoena), que foram avistados, adicionando ainda mais variedade ao espetáculo de vida marinha.
