🇬🇧 JULY 25 RECAP ⤵️

The first full month of summer was remarkable. With unusual (high) sea temperatures in our coast, marine mammals sightings dynamic changed dramatically from any other year!

❕We have spotted 10 species of cetaceans in Faro during this month (check the last picture)❕

🐋𝗕𝗿𝘆𝗱𝗲’𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗲𝘀 were definitely the surprise - with 49 sightings of 𝘉. 𝘦𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘪 in 2025, 28 took place in July. This is currently the 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐦𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐏𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐠𝐚𝐥 ! ( you should look at this, whenever you care - Lisbon made it to the news in 1 sighting, what about us?). Whale season in Faro is from March until early June for the “typical” species. However, this temperature anomaly drove the “tropical whales” into our area!

🐬𝗦𝗽𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗱𝗼𝗹𝗽𝗵𝗶𝗻𝘀 are also an honourable mention with 5 sightings in July - some of them together with the Bryde’s ! This species is not common at all in the Algarve, despite of a few sightings from our team in the previous years!

↪️ Apart from those, we have also spotted 𝗢𝗿𝗰𝗮𝘀, 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗲 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗲𝘀, 𝗦𝗲𝗶 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗲𝘀, 𝗥𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗼’𝘀 𝗗𝗼𝗹𝗽𝗵𝗶𝗻𝘀, 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗽𝗲𝗱 𝗗𝗼𝗹𝗽𝗵𝗶𝗻𝘀, 𝗕𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗗𝗼𝗹𝗽𝗵𝗶𝗻𝘀, 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗻 𝗗𝗼𝗹𝗽𝗵𝗶𝗻𝘀 & 𝗛𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗣𝗼𝗿𝗽𝗼𝗶𝘀𝗲𝘀 ! Not to mention other marine animals such as the 𝗦𝘂𝗻𝗳𝗶𝘀𝗵, 𝗛𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗸𝘀, 𝗦𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗳𝗶𝘀𝗵, 𝗧𝘂𝗻𝗮 & 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗹𝗿𝗮𝘆𝘀✅

❓Wondering if “ Marine Biologists do it better?” Well, the numbers speak for themselves: 𝘄𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗙𝗮𝗿𝗼! Any month & any year. And more sightings than everyone here 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗯𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗱 😜

Meet the Atlantic Spotted dolphin (𝘚𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘢 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴) 🐬

These playful and social dolphins are a summer highlight in our offshore trips! Sightings of this species in Faro happen during the warmer months when a few pods pass through our waters 🌊

❔Did you know they’re born without spots? The famous “freckles” only appear with age! (Scroll through the pictures and try to see the difference between the adults, juveniles and newborns 🥹)❕

🌡️ Spotted Dolphins prefer warmer waters, and with the current SST in Faro coast alongside with prey availability, the chances of meeting them are now on the peak of the year

They are also known to form mixed species groups (MSG). In Faro, we observed them most of the times by themselves, with only 2 MSG sightings recorded so far: one with common dolphins and another one with Bryde’s whales 🐋

Have you ever seen them in the Algarve ?😀

During our Sunset Dolphins tour today we had the chance to meet the Iberian Orcas once again! 🐬

This time, Toni & family were hunting in the area - and “harassing” some sailboats too ⛵️

Not all the Iberian Killer Whales interact with boats, but a few individuals of this specific pod do love a play with rudders 🤪

Due to this, we decided to keep a great distance (over 300 meters) from the closest animals to avoid any more pressure on this super vulnerable population. While we do a normal approach with non-interactive pods, with this one we took the big lens out and watched from a distance ❕

Nevertheless, both costumers and crew were able to see the animals perfectly with an unforgettable sunset 🌅

⚠️ A shout-out for the local authorities: clear information should be spread. Authorities need to be educated about this instead of spreading bad information. Awareness and research about this critically endangered sub population comes most of the time from researchers aboard tour vessels and research vessels. We have witnessed a really unnecessary behaviour from AMN Rescuers that will not go unnoticed. It’s important that AMN knows the rules themselves before being deployed in the field ⚠️

Today it’s also the “World Oceans Day”. For our team, every day is an important day to raise awareness about the oceans and to make our part on its protection.

❔How do we do it though ❔here are a few examples:

✔️Daily doses of education & conservation consciousness about the macrofauna challenges with our costumers
✔️Removing thrash from the sea every day
✔️Collecting data for research non-stop, all year round
✔️Join schools & events regularly to promote knowledge of the oceans
✔️Collaborations with research & conservation entities
(And much more).

The oceans are the present & the future. It’s in our hands to keep them alive.

🐋The Bryde’s Whales: 𝘉𝘢𝘭𝘢𝘦𝘯𝘰𝘱𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘢 𝘦𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘪 🐋

Today our biologists spotted 4 different Bryde’s whales feeding off Faro coast alongside with common dolphins. The whales & dolphins were feeding on small schooling fish (sardines mostly) in a fantastic frenzy that we rarely see here with this species

Among the 5 species of Baleen whales we spot in Faro, Bryde’s are one of the least seen in the area - and before today we have only seen either pairs or alone individuals of this species. But today it was a game changer.

Bryde’s can reach 16.5 meters and weights near 40 Tons and are often associated with warmer waters (As of today, the SST was over 20.5°C in most areas covered by our boats). While ID can be often mistaken with Sei whales, they have 3 distinct ridges on top of the head - which is unique to this species.

This is our 3rd encounter with 𝘉𝘢𝘭𝘢𝘦𝘯𝘰𝘱𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘢 𝘦𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘪 in May 2025 🥳

🔻 April 2025 - just like March - was marked for wind storms after more storms (and lots of rain!). Despite of the ruthless weather in Faro, we still managed to have a few dozen trips and be rewarded with some fantastic sightings 🥰

☀️ The forecast is showing a few days of (finally) good weather in May, but very far from an usual spring. We hope to catch up with the giants this month before their departure 🐋

🇬🇧 𝗙𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗲 𝗞𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗲𝘀 (𝘗𝘴𝘦𝘶𝘥𝘰𝘳𝘤𝘢 𝘤𝘳𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘴) 🇬🇧

Today we had another encounter with one of the most incredible apex predators of the oceans! This is the second sighting of the species in the last 5 days. False Killer Whales are only spotted in Faro region during spring - when Blue fin tuna is abundant in our shore.

They can get BIG! FKW can reach 6 meters in length and weights near 1500kg ! Despite of seeing them (today) relatively close to shore in shallower waters, False Killer whales are oceanic species that usually inhabit deep offshore waters 🌊 Due to the close proximity of Faro to deep waters, we have a higher chance of spotting these animals here when compared to other areas of mainland Portugal!

During this sighting, we’ve counted nearly 200 animals and logged both feeding and social behaviours in what was one of the most jaw dropping sightings of this species we had in several over the last years 🤯

Soon you will be able to learn more about them in our website as well as scientific communications 📝

🇬🇧 We always love the day of “Calm before the storm” when Levante is approaching. 💨

Today in Faro we had high expectations, and nature did not disappoint!

During the 11:30 trip we met a super cool pod of Risso’s dolphins feeding right at the inlet. After a while, the hunt was over and the family got together travelling East 🐬
We continued our journey out and quickly found a pod of Bottlenose dolphins with calves !

Later on the day during the sunset dolphins tour, another fantastic pod of Bottlenose delighted everyone with high jumps! Shortly after, it was time for a bit of whale watching: a minke whale was travelling around the 600m depth line 🐋

🇬🇧 YEAR 2024 RECAP (SWIPE TO SEE THE STATS)🐋

🐬We had the most incredible year in Ocean Vibes history! Where should we start? 🥹

Over the last 12 months, we have spotted 14 species of cetaceans in Faro (yes, in one single year!). How awesome is that ? 🤩 let’s drop down a few HIGHLIGHTS:

🔷FIN WHALES - we spotted fins 115 times this year with one specific sighting where we had 16 whales feeding at the same time 🤯 (unsure about when to see the giants ? Swipe and check the sightings % per month - it’s very obvious 😁)

🔷MORE SPECIES - in 2024 we saw for the first time in Faro Pilot Whales, Spotted dolphins & Risso Dolphins

🔷RESEARCH - we presented 4 different works in conference (Italy) and conference (Australia). Moreover, a paper was published regarding the impact of WW vessels in dolphins in the Algarve

🔷MSG - this year we logged the highest number of mixed species groups in the area (Poster available in highlights)

🔷OCEAN POLLUTION - our team removed over 200kg of debris from the ocean (which ranges from plastic to glasses and loads of discarded fishing gear!)

🔷TEAM - Ocean Vibes staff increased from 3 to 5 fixed paid positions apart from 16 volunteers and students

🔷TOURISM - Over 4600 tourists had the chance to spot cetaceans with us and learn more about their ecology and conservation issues!

💎SPECIES SIGHTED💎

🐋About November 2024🐬

🇦🇺During the last month two of our researchers - Susana & Alfredo - travelled to the other side of the world to present our research work in Perth (Australia) at the 25th Biennal Conference on the Biology of Marine Mammals (by )🇦🇺

🔬Alfredo did a short talk about the First insights on False Killer Whales in Mainland Portugal, whereas Susana presented a poster regarding Mixed-Species associations of Cetaceans in South Portugal 🇵🇹

❕Those were the only cetacean related research projects from mainland Portugal represented in this amazing conference ❕

⏩️We will keep working hard to learn more about our local fauna (and how to protect it) while spreading the word throughout the world in the main events relevant to our research 🔬

📝 NEW RESEARCH PAPER 🔬

🐬 “The impact of touristic whale-watching on Delphinus delphis and Tursiops truncatus in the Algarve Coast: Combining acoustic analysis and
land observations” 🐬

‼️ This week a new paper was published with .algarve , & Pattern institute (Faro) regarding the impact of WW vessels in common & Bottlenose dolphins in the Algarve ‼️

🔈 Combining acoustic data collected by our team (and not only) as well as land based observations, we found that WW boats have a significant impact on those species. Moreover, in some areas of the Algarve most of the time the laws are not respected and the dolphins are being overexposed to boats 🚤

🐬 Key findings indicate less echolocation clicks in Bottlenose dolphins with boat presence and simpler-shorter whistles with common dolphins ‼️

Team work makes the dream work 💙

Thanks to an amazing partnership with RAAlg-Rede de Arrojamentos do Algarve para cetáceos e tartarugas marinhas we’ve been able to collect valuable data about cetaceans - diversity, ecology, population dynamics, acoustics and much more 🙏

Combining forces, knowledge and resources is the way to do research with local fauna that will potentially provide the means to implement proper conservation measures for our species 🐋

A big thanks to all of those involved in our scientific trips!
