Rise and shine, my friends! ☀️ The magic of a sunrise above the clouds at Pico do Arieiro is something you have to experience at least once. This is one of the most popular attractions in Madeira and for good reason, the views are simply out of this world.
The photo you see here was taken at Miradouro do Juncal, a fantastic and easy-to-reach viewpoint. While we didn’t get that typical fiery-red sky that some sunrises bring, look at those clouds! Being up here, feeling like you’re floating above a sea of white, is a memory that will stay with you forever.
Here are a few tips from my experience to make sure your sunrise mission is a success:
- Go early! Seriously, I can’t stress this enough. If you want to get a good parking spot and avoid a long line of cars, you need to arrive at the parking area by at least 5:40 AM.
- Safety first. The trails are dark before sunrise. Make sure you have proper hiking shoes, a headlamp or flashlight and warm layers. The temperature up there can be much colder than in Funchal.
- Explore your options. Miradouro do Juncal is a quick spot, but if you have a bit more time and want a different perspective, consider Ninho da Manta viewpoint. Both offer breathtaking views!
