Como nasceu o nome "Portugal"

Cale (ou Calém) era o nome do povoado na margem oposta, hoje Vila Nova de Gaia. Duas margens, um só nome a nascer entre elas.

Com o tempo, "Portus Cale" transformou-se foneticamente em "Portucale" — e mais tarde deu origem à palavra "Portugal".

No século IX, esta região já era conhecida como Condado Portucalense — o embrião territorial e político do futuro reino de Portugal.

Ou seja: antes de existir Portugal, já existia o Porto. A cidade não tem apenas história — é a origem do nome de toda a nação.

Over time, "Portus Cale" phonetically transformed into "Portucale" — and later gave rise to the word "Portugal".

In the 9th century, this region was already known as the County of Portucale — the territorial and political embryo of the future kingdom of Portugal.
