If you’re visiting the Algarve for the first time, here’s what you need to know ↓🇵🇹 
There are a lot of beautiful places in the Algarve. These 10 are the ones we’d prioritise if you want to see the landscapes that make this corner of Portugal so special.

The best way to do it is to group them by area:  ✨ LAGOS
Ponta da Piedade at 8:30am, before the boat tours get going, is one of the best 20 minutes you’ll spend in Portugal. Head to Praia Dona Ana right after for a swim, then wander the old town, cobblestone streets and little squares. 
🏖️ CENTRAL ALGARVE – Portimão → Albufeira
This is where you’ll find the famous postcard scenery alongside the bigger resorts. Praia do Carvalho is reached through a tunnel carved into the rock – impressive. Add Praia da Marinha, Benagil by kayak, Algar Seco … and Silves for a break from the coast and a taste of the Algarve’s Moorish history.

🌊 WEST COAST & SAGRES
The wild, cliff-heavy edge of the Algarve. Golden light, huge Atlantic sunsets, soft green hills and beaches where your phone might finally lose signal. We especially love Praia do Beliche and Praia da Barriga. Surf? Head to Praia do Amado or Arrifana. And catch sunset at Cabo de São Vicente or one of the westerly beaches. (Bring a jacket!)🧥  
🚤 EAST ALGARVE — Faro, Tavira & Ria Formosa
The side of the Algarve many first-time visitors miss. Tavira has a completely different feel to the western Algarve. Take a boat out to Ilha Deserta, bring lunch and enjoy the fact that there isn’t much there. That’s rather the point.

HOW TO DO IT: If you choose a central base like Lagos, give yourself a day for the west coast, another for the central Algarve, and another for the east if you have the time. You can then come back to Lagos for its restaurants, bars, activities and nightlife.
Prefer somewhere quieter? Ferragudo makes another great central base.

Lagos Portugal has 9 gorgeous beaches, but which one is right for you? 🏖️↓

Use this as a cheat sheet and check the useful information below before you go.
Share it with whoever you’re going to Lagos with 🇵🇹🌞

🌟 useful notes:

• Iconic Cliffs: Praia de Dona Ana and Praia do Camilo* have postcard views. Parking fills quickly, so arrive early or walk the boardwalks from town (bring water, sunscreen and a hat!).

• No Stairs Required: If you aren’t up for hauling gear down cliff faces, head straight to Meia Praia or Praia Porto de Mós. Both offer ample free parking right at the sand, meaning you can practically drive right up to your sunbed or seafood lunch.

• Kayaks & Families: Praia da Batata and Praia dos Estudantes have calm water, public toilets, cafés close by and cave tunnels between the beaches. Kayak tours leave beside the fortress.

• SUP Hire to discover secret beaches: Jah Shaka Surf Shop rents inflatable SUPs (easy and suitable for two people) ≈€20 for 4 hours.

• Escaping the Wind: The Algarve winds can be strong. While it always depends on the wind direction, the cliff-backed coves of Praia Estudantes, Praia do Camilo and and the beach at the neighbouring village of Burgau—are often good bets.

• Swimsuit-Free Sunbaking: Want a seamless, all-over tan? Clothing-optional sunbathing is respected at the far end of Meia Praia, the far ends of Praia de Porto de Mós, and at the hidden Praia do Canavial.

• Canavial Access: You can walk from Porto de Mós at low tide—but don’t get caught by the incoming tide.

• Sunset: Most of the famous cliff beaches go into shadow early. For the longest sun exposure, head to Praia de Porto de Mós. It faces west, making it the perfect place to pack a picnic and watch the sunset from the sand, or enjoy a sundowner from the two beachfront bars.

*At the time of posting, Praia do Camilo stairway is closed, so Camilo can only be reached by kayak, SUP or boat. Hopefully reopening very soon.

Lagos Portugal: Everything you need to know 2026 🇵🇹🏖️↓

If you’re planning a trip to Lagos Portugal, read the essentials below. 📌Save this for your trip.

✈️🚗 Getting to & around Lagos

Fly to Faro. From there its a ≈50 min drive, or ≈2h30, 6-8€ with bus or train. Portugal train website cp.pt
Flixbus goes directly from Faro airport, ca 2h, 6€

⚠️ If renting a car:
The A22 Highway from Faro to Lagos is now free, but you still need a Via Verde toll device in your car. Some car rental companies charge extra for this device (≈20€). Local companies like Marinacar don’t charge for it.

🚙 Do you need a car?
Lagos old town is pedestrian only, and most Lagos beaches can be accessed by boardwalks, so a car is not necessary. But if you want to see the west coast and surrounding beaches, it’s worth getting one.
- Lagos has Taxis, Uber & public buses (not so frequent)
- parking in fills up fast in summer (go by 10 am)

7 things that will change how you experience the Algarve, Portugal 🇵🇹🌞↓

🏖️ The Algarve has two completely different sides:
East (Vilamoura, Albufeira) = beach clubs, rooftop bars, heels-at-night energy
West (Sagres, Lagos) = raw cliffs, surf, flip flops, wild nature.
Neither is wrong — but know which one you’re after before you book.
The further west you go, the more authentic it gets.

🗺️ The best bits aren’t on Google Maps…
Clifftop boardwalks, old town walls, hidden hiking trails — you won’t find them on your phone.
Grab a free Goodtimes Lagos illustrated map, ask your host, or just talk to a local.

⏱️ You cannot be in a rush here
Sellers won’t stop mid-conversation just to serve you.
It feels strange at first. Then you realise — connection matters more than speed.

🐟 How to spot a real Portuguese restaurant:

Somehow it totally works.

LAGOS NO CAR ITINERARY ↓🇵🇹🌞🏖️👟

Planning a trip to Lagos Portugal and wondering if you need a car? You don’t ;).
 Lagos’ old town is small one-way, cobblestone, primarily pedestrian streets. It’s better not to drive inside.
The beaches are all reachable via sturdy boardwalks, there are public buses, cheap Uber & Taxis, Tuk tuks and plenty of day trip tours.

Here is how to do Lagos without a car - including routes Google-maps doesn’t know about!  🏠 Where to stay (so you don’t need a car):
- close to Lagos town walls (inside or out)
- close to Lagos Marina
- Around Dona Ana Beach

🚐 Getting here: ✈️ Fly to: FARO then
- Flix Bus from the airport to Lagos ≈8€, ≈2h30
- Public Bus to Faro then train or bus to Lagos ≈8€, ≈2h30
- Shuttle from 28€/pp, ≈1h30
From Lisbon, Bus/train (cp.pt) 3h45, ≈20€

🏖️ Getting to the beaches:
- Praia da Batata & Praia dos Estudantes, the town beaches, just 5 minutes walk from Praça do Infante
- Praia Dona Ana, ≈20 minutes walk from town. Tip: take the coastal cliff Boardwalk starting at Praia do Pinhão
- Praia do Camilo: From Dona Ana beach follow the boardwalk (starts by the car park) ≈10 mins. It’s not marked on google maps!
- Meia Praia, ≈20 minute walk from town, over the footbridge. At the Train station head right. Or in summer, take the Vai e Vem ferry from Praça Infante across the canal - a few minutes ride ≈1€
- Praia Porto de Mos: Take bus #2 from Praça do Infante, ≈20 min, 1.20€

🗓️ 1 WEEK Itinerary:
DAY 1: Beach tour. Start Batata Beach, pass through tunnel to Praia Estudantes. Start boardwalk at Praia do Pinhao → Praia Dona Ana → Praia do Camilo → Ponta da Piedade.
DAY 2: Sunrise yoga on Batata Beach. Old town, street art, fish market, eat a Pastel de Nata.
DAY 3: Kayak or small boat Grotto tour (Start point Batata beach). Massage. Nightlife.
DAY 4: Lagos Marina & Meia Praia. Eat Sardines at a beach bar.
