Michelangelo's David: what nobody tells you before you go. Most people leave the Accademia not knowing any of this. 🇮🇹

1️⃣ He was never meant to be indoors. David was carved for the roofline of Florence's Cathedral — then judged too heavy to lift. The one in Piazza della Signoria is a copy.

2️⃣ He's looking at an enemy. His gaze is turned left, toward Rome — a deliberate statement. Not a peaceful statue: a city announcing itself.

3️⃣ The proportions are intentionally wrong. Oversized hands and head, designed to be seen from below. Every distortion was calculated.

4️⃣ He was carved from a rejected block. Two sculptors had abandoned the stone; it sat 25 years. Michelangelo was 26 — and took two years.

5️⃣ The crowds arrive faster than you think. By 10am the Accademia is full. Without a timed ticket, you wait outside.
