Portugal varies in temperature and vibe from month to month, season to season.

And we see a lot of travelers making the mistake of coming in August to see Nazaré famous waves … and getting disappointed when they see flat waves and no surfers.

Or, travelers coming in January looking for a beach getaway, and it’s raining, grey, and most of the beach bars and restaurants are closed.

Here’s what we recommend 👇🏼

⛳ Golf: late April to late May. Best greens, fewest crowds.

🏄 Nazaré waves: December through February for the giant ones!!

🌸 Flower festival in Madeira: May, when the whole island turns into a parade.

🏰 Sintra at its best: off season, especially December. Skip in July/ August

👨‍👩‍👧 Traveling with kids: Easter or Christmas, when the whole country goes all out.

Right hotel, wrong location? Read this 👇🏼

We test every hotel ourselves before it touches an itinerary, so that we can show you what booking platforms CAN’T.

This week it was Bairro Alto Hotel.

Here’s how it went. We walked the rooms, checked the views, and listened for street noise, because this is in the heart of Lisbon after all!

Then we tried the food. The smoked barnacle toast is a MUST. Cocktails creatively made. And an in-house bakery downstairs to satisfy anyone’s sweet tooth.

But the real win is the location. Nestled on the corner of Camões square, you walk out the door and you’re already where you want to be. No taxi, no big hill to climb home after dinner.

This is the stuff booking sites don’t show you. Yes, they have photos, descriptions and reviews. But we test the beds, eat the food, and meet the staff, so before you arrive it’s already vetted.

🗣️ Learn a few words: obrigado or obrigada (thank you), bom dia (good morning), por favor (please). A little goes a long way.

💶 Great value still exists: eat where the menu is handwritten on a piece of paper, order the prato do dia (plate of the day), drink the house w**e. This is where you see what Portugal’s all about.

🌦️ Pack layers, even in summer. Sintra can run ten degrees cooler than Lisbon on the same afternoon.

🍽️ Order like a local: octopus rice near the coast, francesinha only in Porto, and no, the couvert is not free. If you don’t want it, don’t touch it.

📅 The real deadline: for summer travel, the hotels and guides worth having are locked in months in advance. Plan ahead so you don’t wind up empty handed.
