Set in the Atlantic Ocean, the Madeira archipelago comprises the inhabited islands of Madeira and Porto Santo, together with the protected Desertas and Selvagens islands. Its Portuguese history dates back more than six centuries: Porto Santo was reached by Portuguese navigators in 1418, followed by Madeira in 1419. The latter was named “Madeira” (Portuguese for “wood”) because of the abundance of forest encountered by the first explorers.
