And 'Alex's LONG LIST' free PDF guide to LGBTQ Lisbon & Portugal. Hi there - I am a long-time lover of Lisbon, originally from the UK. I have a Master’s degree in LGBTQ cultural studies from the University of Sussex, I organise the ‘Portugal Hiking LGBTQ’ Meetup group in Lisbon, and I have a passion for the personal stories and anecdotes of historic cities. I first came to Lisbon in 1989 after rea

ding an article in ‘Christopher Street’ gay magazine about the 1974 revolution. The writer described his affair with a revolutionary soldier and he asked: 'Could this revolution also bring about a liberation of sexualities?' I had to come here and find out - and today Lisbon is my home! Let me share my experience of Lisbon with you - and ask me about the other urban and rural hikes I'm planning around Lisbon - there are so many fantastic stories to learn...

Maria Caxuxa (1942) 👸🏻💪
“[She is] as strong as an ox, with a moustache, a cigarette in her lips, a scarf tied to her head and dressed as a woman, but with a male voice, low, even brutal…with the ease and manners of a guy, rolling a cigarette like someone who does it every day… living free - like a man”.

The only woman in the male-dominated industry of the slaughter-house - Maria Caxuxa found a way to live life on her own terms - and she took no prisoners! 🙂‍💪🤦🏽💥

National poet; Literary hero; Self-loathing q***r. 😥 Fernando Pessoa (died 1935) "Oh great pederast - I am one of yours".

'The Poem That Should Not Have been Written, but that was written'.
"...I love you because I love you, loathing
Myself, and that loathing wounds my love,
With a feeling so completely hurtful,
That the hurt, being a feeling and making me feel,
Yet more, increases the feeling of my wanting you,
Of my being unable to want to be able to have you”.

🏳️‍🌈 To learn more about this Portuguese national hero and his hidden poems of frustrated love for other men (and his hilariously disastrous advertising slogan that resulted in Coca-Cola being banned in Portugal!), join 🌈'Alex's Q***r Lisbon History Tour' - a fun walking tour through the sites and stories of the scandalous (sometimes bizarre), always entertaining q***r history! The three 'species' of 'Fanchonos' in Lisbon's bordello's of the 1800s...

👄 🤦🏽 💪 Hard-working male ‘Fanchonos’ in the bordellos (1860s): “Among us… we will only speak of these types: the fanchono by vocation, the fanchono by necessity, and the piggish fanchono”. Despite police raids and prison, nothing intimidated these guys and gals - and no one could stop them singing and partying in the cells! 👏👏❤️ 🎵 👀 💪
