The Vasco da Gama Bridge, the longest bridge in the European Union, was dedicated on March 29, 1998. It is a cable-stayed bridge that spans the Tagus River in Lisbon, Portugal. It is named after the famous Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama, who was the first European to reach India by sea.

The bridge was built to relieve traffic congestion in the city and to provide a direct link between Lisbon and the Algarve region in southern Portugal. It was the longest bridge in Europe at the time of construction, with a total length of 17.2 kilometers (10.7 miles) and a main span of 420 meters (1,380 feet).

Construction of the bridge began in 1995 and was completed in 1998, at a cost of approximately €1 billion. The bridge has six lanes of traffic and has become an iconic landmark in Lisbon and is an important part of the city's transportation infrastructure.

In addition to its practical function, the Vasco da Gama Bridge is also a popular tourist attraction. Visitors can take a boat tour or a helicopter ride to see the bridge and enjoy views of Lisbon and the surrounding.
