Barbearia Oliveira Estrela

Part of “Lojas com Histórico (shops with a history)” program, Barbearia Oliveira first opened its doors in 1970

This barbershop pioneered comfort, and is celebrated as the first barbershop in Lisbon that introduced built-in hair-washing basins at the stations. This meant that clients didn’t have to stand up from the barbers chair to have their hair washed

This location was a trendsetter at the time, introducing a dedicated waiting bar alongside an in-house shoe shine station to maximise comfort

Nowadays, having a waiting area & a hair-washing basin are standards we expect in all barbershops. But it’s important to remember that it wasn’t always the case. It’s because of such innovations that we have our creature comforts today

GAUDIO'S DESIGN

I had the absolute pleasure of speaking with Alexandre yesterday who has his own little quiosque souvenir shop in the heart of Baixa 💛

Inspired by the heart of Viana, you can see elements of its design in all of his artworks and prints

His artwork is not only limited to designs of Lisbon and Portugal (although admittedly those were my favourite), he also loves to design artworks based on characters such as Harry Potter, Wednesday, Tintin, etc.

⚠️ Did you know, he didn’t always have this store. For the first part of his life, he spent 17 long years in marketing, before making the leap into what he’s truly passionate about ✨

That goes to show you, its never too late to follow your passion 💛

PSA all tuktuks & walk(ers), avoid this road for two weeks unless you want to experience a mini dust-storm 💀

Avenida Liberdade is getting an upgrade with new paved roads, but that means until its completed, expect a lot of dust kicked up by non-stop cars

I present to you, “the influencer special”👇🏼

“Why did no one tell me Lisbon/Portugal was THIS cheap”

It’s the golden phrase that triggers any local who has seen its dramatic change over the past decade

Quietly disappearing are the local mercearias, corner shops, and local trades

Replacing them, a mix of national & international brands, alongside shops & restaurants that are all tailored to those who spend less than a week visiting the country

However, don’t misunderstand the reason for this post

I’m well aware that tourism is a huge part of Lisbon’s economy, and we absolutely love that you’ve chosen to visit Portugal

I only hope that you come with an open mind and a prestige for those who are already here

At a time where many cities are starting to lose their unique identity, you have Águeda

It’s a town of around 11,000 people with no major landmarks, and isn’t on anyone’s must-see list

And yet, for a few months out of the year, they hang over 3,000 colourful umbrellas, providing shade and whimsy to the streets below

It only gets better come December, as they also have a Christmas edition. There will be illuminated umbrellas alongside other festive installation such as a giant Santa & small decorative houses 🙌🏽

It’s a town that I’ve only recently stumbled across but will definitely be coming back to soon

Summer ending only means one thing:
🌅 More vibrant & longer lasting sunsets are returning

Here’s why winter sunsets are scientifically better:
💜 lower sun angle, leading to more intense reds, pinks, and oranges
💚 less humidity, resulting with sharper colours
❤️ cleaner air, less smog & haze blocking the views
🧡 longer duration due to the way the sun approaches the horizon at a more shallow angle
