“Out & About. Discovering Architecture. EUmies Awards 2026”

Graça Funicular
by Atelier Bugio
Lisbon, Portugal

During this visit, architect João Favila took us on a journey beyond the Graça Funicular.
He explained, for example, how this project, many years later, realises part of a broader mobility plan.
He also spoke about the role of these contemporary studies in opening up hidden spaces to the public, such as the cloister of the Church of Graça, a centuries-old space that we also had the opportunity to glimpse.
Lisbon is a very rich city, made up of multiple layers, some still waiting to be discovered. And with each discovery, the city reveals itself more clearly.

In collaboration with Atelier Bugio – Arch João Favila Menezes and collaborators and EMEL – empresa de mobilidade e estacionamento de Lisboa.

Visita ao Funicular da Graça, Lisboa
com o arquiteto João Favila Menezes
Atelier Bugio ()

The guided tour on the Funicular da Graça invites visitors to reflect on — and physically engage with — aspects of the city that often go unnoticed in everyday life. Architect João Favila Menezes describes how the project was conceived as you make your way up from Rua dos Lagares, walking beneath the structure and continuing toward Graça. Along the route, layers of history and public spaces converge, uncovering subtle connections that might otherwise remain hidden. The visit culminates in a fitting reward: a panoramic view across Lisbon from the Miradouro da Graça.

→ “Out & About. Discovering Architecture” brings the Shortlisted works of the EUmies Awards 2026 closer to the public through visits guided by architects, clients and people closely connected to the projects. Organised by .eu and , together with the expertise of , the programme gives everyone the chance to discover buildings and public spaces in their cities—or in places they are visiting—guided by the architects, clients and people who know these projects best.

On a beautiful late spring afternoon in a stunning setting, everyone felt welcome in the open living room of the Piódão. There was time to hear about the project by architects Paula del Rio and João Branco, to exchange ideas on how to face the challenges ahead between the President of Arganil Town Council, the representative of the Tourism of Portugal, the President and Coordinator of the Association of Historic Villages and the economist Professor, moderated by architect Nuno Grande. There was time for dancing, drinking, and changing affections. There was time to live this special place, even after the sun had set.
