The oldest known fortification at this spot dates from the 2nd century BC, although some of the remains found here date from as far back as the 6th century BC. Archaeological evidence has also made it possible to discover traces of the presence of Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans and Muslims, confirming the human occupation of this area since very remote times.

The Elevador de Santa Justa, also referred to as Elevador do Carmo, is a public transport system, located in the city center of Lisbon, in the district of the same name, in Portugal. It connects Rua do Ouro and Rua do Carmo to Largo do Carmo and is one of the most interesting monuments in downtown Lisbon. It consists of a metal tower where two cabins circulate, and a walkway that connects the upper floor to the Carmo area. The elevator structure is made of cast iron, and uses a scheme inspired by the neo-Gothic style.
The ticket office is located behind the tower, under the steps of Rua do Carmo. Passengers can ascend or descend by elevator inside two elegant wooden cabins with brass fittings.

This site museum, which forms part of the Museum of Lisbon, is located in the historic quarter of the city. It reveals one of the most important monuments of the roman Felicitas Iulia Olisipo: the city's theatre, with visible structures dated from the 1st century AD.

In addition to the archaeological excavations, where visitors can see the broad foundation of the proscaenium (the supporting wall of the scenic façade) and the orchestra (the area reserved for the city´s elite), the Museum of Lisbon - Roman Theatre has a long-term exhibition area installed in two buildings from different periods. The south building dates from the 17th century, with a floor added during the industrial age to accommodate a suitcase factory. The north building was constructed in the late 19th century. Both were restored and adapted for use as part of the museum, opening in 2001.
