🇵🇹 Today, on April 25th, Portugal celebrates 50 years of Freedom. This day marks the end of a dark era and the dawn of a new beginning.
Before the 25th of April of 1974:
There were no free elections.
Women couldn't travel abroad without their husband's written permission.
Those with dissenting opinions faced imprisonment and torture.
Employers paid their workers whatever they pleased.
Public displays of affection were prohibited.
Young people spent four years in the military, including two in war.
Using a lighter outdoors without a permit was forbidden.
Riding a bicycle without a license was prohibited.
As we raise our voices in celebration today, let's also remember the tears shed, the battles fought, and the triumphs won. Poetry is on the street. 🕊️
