Did you know that during the Holocaust, for thousands of European Jews, Lisbon was their only way out? It's a story not often told, and one of aching hardship and struggle, but also, survival and hope. We love sharing the story, giving it life with photos of the refugees who lived it, and reading their own words of their experiences in Lisbon.

For every person who takes this tour, we make an $18 donation to HIAS. HIAS helped Lisbon's Jewish refugees in the 1940s and still help refugees around the world today.

The neighborhood of Belém is a little like Washington DC's National Mall: a beautifully manicured expanse of historical monuments and museums, showcasing the nation to the world.

Problem is, it's a celebration of the Portuguese Colonial Empire. Everything there was funded by colonialism, or celebrates the people who ground half the world under their heel. That's why we've created our "Anti-racist tour of Belém." Unlike other tours of Belém, we grapple seriously with the story that these monuments try to tell, and dig into complex questions of how we should go about remembering the past.

One of our half-day tours is "How to Overthrow a Dictator."

Many outside Portugal don't know that this country suffered under the longest European fascist dictatorship, which was finally overthrown in 1974. In our tour, we try to demystify the fascist Estado Novo, taking a hard look at the oppressive nightmare that ruled Portugal and its worldwide colonies for 48 years with a visit to the extraordinary Museu do Aljube Resistência e Liberdade. We also take a look at the messy business of violent revolt, and remember those who gave their lives to make Portugal a better place and throw off its colonial rule.
