How to spot an authentic Portuguese restaurant 🇵🇹👇

Wasting a vacation meal on an overpriced, underwhelming tourist trap is the worst. You want the real deal: family-run tascas, grandma behind the stove, and actual local culture.

Here is your 30-second sidewalk checklist to spot an authentic gem before you take a seat:

📜 1. The Menu (Keep it Simple)

Tourist Trap: Translated into 6 languages, features tiny country flags, faded food photos, and serves burgers alongside bacalhau.

Authentic Gem: Handwritten on a chalkboard or printed on a plain sheet of paper. If it’s mostly in Portuguese, you’ve hit the jackpot.

🪧 2. The “Barker” Rule

If a host is standing on the pavement desperately waving a laminated menu and begging you to come in, keep walking. Truly local spots are way too busy serving tables inside to stand on the sidewalk selling you a pitch.

🍷 3. The Table & Crowd Check

Tablecloths: Simple paper tablecloths over fabric are the ultimate sign of a classic, no-frills tasca.

Vibe: If the room is a loud, chaotic symphony of local chatter and tables are drinking house w**e from simple carafes (not giant, neon-colored pitchers of sangria), you’re in the right place.

The first day in a new country is exciting, but let’s be honest: when you’re tired and jet-lagged, rookie travel mistakes are bound to happen.

Save this post for your next trip so you don’t fall for these 5 common traps:

1️⃣ Over-scheduling Day 1: Don’t book heavy tours right after landing. Keep your first day as a “soft launch”—stroll around, grab a coffee, and let your body adjust.

2️⃣ The Airport Transport Trap: Avoid unmarked taxis. Pre-plan your route: check if there’s a Metro/train, use rideshare apps (like Uber or Bolt), or head straight to the official airport taxi rank.

3️⃣ Landmark Dining: Never eat directly facing a major monument. Walk 4 blocks away into the side streets. If locals are eating there and the menus aren’t laminated, the food will be 10x better and cheaper!

4️⃣ Airport Currency Kiosks: Airport exchange booths and standalone ATMs (like Euronet) have predatory fees. Skip them, use a local bank ATM in the city, and always choose to pay in the local currency.
