Two friends, one day, and a plan that was simply "show us the real Portugal."

We left Lisbon in the morning and started in Nazaré. They stood at the lighthouse, looking at the place where the biggest waves in the world are born, and went quiet for a moment. Lunch was fresh fish by the beach, with no rush at all.

Then came Óbidos, a medieval village wrapped in castle walls. They walked the cobblestone streets, tried ginjinha in a chocolate cup and laughed like they were 20 again.

On the way back, one of them told me: "This was the best day of our trip."

Hoje é feriado em Portugal: 5 de outubro, Dia da República! 🇵🇹
E essa bandeira verde e vermelha da foto? Nasceu com a República. Antes disso, ela era azul e branca.
Agora deixa eu te contar a parte que quase ninguém conta.
Na noite de 4 de outubro de 1910, enquanto Lisboa fervia com a revolução, a rainha D. Amélia estava lá no alto da serra, no Palácio da Pena. Foi a sua última noite como rainha em Portugal. Pela manhã, desceu às pressas para encontrar o filho, o rei D. Manuel II, um rapaz de apenas 20 anos. Horas depois, a família real partia para o exílio. O rei nunca mais voltou.
E tem um detalhe que eu adoro contar aos brasileiros: D. Manuel II nasceu em 15 de novembro de 1889, exatamente o dia em que o Brasil virou República. Parece roteiro de novela, mas é história de verdade!
Quem visita a Pena hoje encontra os aposentos praticamente como a família deixou. Dá um arrepio, eu garanto.
