Half-timbered houses in every shade of pastel. Vineyards climbing the hills right up to the edge of town. A language and a cuisine that borrow from both sides of the Rhine.

Alsace doesn't look quite like anywhere else in France, and it doesn't need to try. Wander the canals of Strasbourg's Petite France, cycle the Route des Vins through villages like Riquewihr and Eguisheim, or just find a table, order a tarte flambée, and watch the afternoon go by.

It's understated in the best way: beautiful without performing for anyone.

If Tuscany is the postcard, Umbria is the quiet page after it (and the one most people skip past, and shouldn't!)

Same rolling hills, same golden light, half the crowds. Assisi at dawn before the tour groups arrive. W**e tastings in Montefalco that feel like a conversation, not a tasting menu. Truffle season in the hills around Norcia, where the whole town seems to smell like it.
