A DIFFERENT KIND OF CARNIVAL! 🎭
Caretos de Podence, who since December 2019 have been included on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, bring a dramatic transformation to their village each year. During Entrudo the usual calm of this small village of around 200 inhabitants, in the municipality of Macedo de Cavaleiros, is shattered by these exuberant masked figures who take to the streets to rattle their cowbells and playfully chase the young women.
The Caretos embody a Carnival tradition from Trás os Montes and Alto Douro with Celtic and pre Roman roots, likely connected to the ancient Galaici and Bracari peoples of Galicia and northern Portugal. On Carnival Sunday and Shrove Tuesday, the young men of the village assume these mysterious identities and, brimming with energy, race through Podence with leaps, shouts, and ringing bells.

UM CARNAVAL DIFERENTE! 🎭
Os Caretos de Podence que desde dezembro de 2019 integram a lista da UNESCO de Património Cultural Imaterial da Humanidade, todos os anos, durante o Entrudo a paz que habitualmente reina nesta aldeia de cerca de 200 habitantes no concelho de Macedo de Cavaleiros é interrompida por estas personagens endiabradas que saem à rua para chocalhar as raparigas.
Os caretos representam uma tradição do Carnaval de Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro com raízes célticas e de um período pré-romano, provavelmente relacionada com a existência dos povos Galaicos e Brácaros na Galiza e norte de Portugal. No Domingo Gordo e na Terça-feira de Carnaval, os rapazes da aldeia encarnam as misteriosas personagens e cheios de energia percorrem Podence aos saltos e gritos.
