Portugal in the Center of the World PORTUGAL WORLD CENTER develops projects and exchanges , events, actions , conferences and seminars. That was how we found our mission to this millennium.

In 1970, the newspaper “O EMIGRANTE” was born with the motto “ACT BY SERVING”. Throughout the years it became the greatest friend of all of those who had to emigrate…

In the year of 1986, Portugal was entering the European Union. The Portuguese citizens who lived in Europe were no longer considered to be emigrants, but European citizens... Therefore, the old “O EMIGRANTE” was transformed and there was created “Mundo Português”. Mundo Português has grown and it was transformed into something more. If “O EMIGRANTE” had been a newspaper dedicated to causes, “Mundo Português” is not only dedicated to causes, but also projects and initiatives, in order to respond market demands. That was the idea that has gone right and made us run, even more, around the world and for that reason we grabbed PORTUGAL in whose name everything happens, and for being the reason and the cause of our existence and of our work. Thus was born the great cause that makes us smile, because when we work for Portugal, there is always a smile in every gesture, in every project, in every idea. Thus was born our smile…

And when we smile, we always think of our little Portugal, but always there, in the center of the world, from where our navigators left to reach the whole world.. BEING AT THE CENTER OF THE WORLD WITH A SMILE. Thus was born a concept 100% Portuguese and 100% private, to take Portugal to you, always with a SMILE. Through PORTUGAL CENTER OF THE WORLD we will make Portugal known, ALWAYS WITH A SMILE, in the entrepreneurship area and companies, in culture and society, in tourism and innovation, bringing you to Portugal and showing you how we are and how we work. ALWAYS WITH A SMILE and always in the center of the world. PORTUGAL CENTER OF THE WORLD will develop projects and exchanges, events, actions, congresses and seminars. Our target are Portuguese living abroad, either of diaspora or Lusophony. Not only foreigners Portuguese speaking, but also those who can only speak foreign languages. All of them are part of our “encompassing the globe”, with whom we want to establish relationships, always with our SMILE.

Santana

Santana is a lovely town situated in the greenish northern coast of the lovely Madeira Island, famous for its traditional triangular houses with two floors and stem ceiling, coloured with the typical Madeira colours of white, blue and red.

Situated at about 312 meters hugh, from here one has astonishing panoramas over the Island and the Atlantic coast, as well as unforgettable views over the Laurissilva Forest, classified by UNESCO as World Natural Heritage.

Santana is famous for its vivid traditions that have prevailed over the centuries, fact that derivates from its prolonged isolation, as during many years Santana was inaccessible by ocean and land.
Land of fertile soils, here are produced many of the natural products of the Island.

It is worth knowing the rich heritage of the Santana region, either the natural, where there are several and lovely Levadas that show off the agricultural importance over the centuries, and also the amazing wild side of the Madeira Island; as well as the architectonic heritage, with monuments such as the Santo António Chapel dated from the 16th century or the Santa Ana Chapel (17th century).

Sites such as the Pico Cortado, the Achada do Teixeira (at about 1592 metres high), the Cova da Roda or the Pico Ruivo (at 1862 metres high) show off the natural charm of the “Atlantic Pearl” (as the Madeira Island is often named as), where the green of the vegetation merges with exotic flowers and plants, in the island where Spring lasts all year.

Also in Santana is situated the Thematic Park of Madeira, dedicated to the history, science and tradition of this wonderful Madeira Archipelago, endowed with four multimedia pavilions.

This small village with little fishermen houses has a astonishing landscape and warm calm waters, with restaurants that serve quality-top seafood.

Vila do Conde

Vila do Conde is a lovely town located in the north region of Portugal, on the northern river bank of the river Ave, by the coastline, and it is an important industrial centre, fishing port and, every time more, a Tourist centre.

The origins of the locality are quite ancient, being occupied by Celts in the 8th century b.C, up in the hill over the actual town. From the 3rd century b.C onwards it is occupied by Romans that bring the locality further down the hill, and later it is occupied and influenced by Suebis.
In the beginning of the 14th century the Order of St Clare Monastery started a new development to the town as well as, later, the development on the 15th century of the Shipyard in sequence of the Portuguese Discoveries Era and the increment of the maritime trading, augmenting the anceint connection of this town with the ocean.

Vila do Conde has several important monuments to be seen, like the gorgeous St Clare Monastery and its Church and Conventual Residence, as well as other interesting spots, like the magnificent Aqueduct with 999 round arches, from the beginning of the 18th century, the Mother Church (16th century), the Santa Catarina Chapel (15th century), the São Francisco and Misericórdia Churches, the São Roque and São Bento Chapels, or the São João Baptista Castle, or Fort, located in the lovely river Ave mouth, built to protect the port and the town’s entrance, mainly from the dangerous pirates.
Also quite interesting to be seen are the quite ancient Shipyards, for wooden constructions, nowadays located in the nearby small village of Azurara.

The hole Vila do Conde’s region in rich in archaeological vestiges, with pre-historical and pre-roman vestiges throughout the municipality, like the São Paio Hill Fort in Labruge, or the Bagunte Hill Fort.

Throughout the municipality there are several manor houses and small palaces attesting the great richness that the fertile soils, the river and the ocean have provided all over the years.

Due to its proximity with the coastline, Vila do Conde region has astonishing sandy beaches, quite frequented and appreciated during summer time.

Vila do Conde is widely known for its handmade production, namely for the Bobbin Lacework (“Rendas de Bilros“), following the old tradition dating from the 16th century. All this ancient technique and knowledge can be observed in the interesting Bobbin Lacework Museum.
All this interest for handicraft is quite obvious during the National Fair that takes place every year between July and August, attracting a large number of visitors.

Porto Moniz

Porto Moniz is a charming village situated on the northern area of the wonderful Madeira Island, and is one of the most ancient localities in the northern side of the island, famous for its natural swimming pools.
This region was during many centuries isolated from the other localities of the island, only accessible by foot or by sea. Only after the 2nd Great World War the lovely road with astonishing landscapes and waterfalls that links the region of Porto Moniz to the São Vicente department.

Porto Moniz is one of the most photographed villages in the Madeira Island as it presents landscapes of great beauty, surrounded by agricultural fields and with the village nestled in the mountain valley, facing the immense Atlantic Ocean.

The natural swimming pools formed in the volcanic rocks, linked among them by concrete sidewalks, allow a wonderful panorama, in between rocks sculpted by the ocean erosion that form lovely effects and a light typical foam. These swimming pools are the image of Porto Moniz, bringing many visitors to the region. The village is also endowed with a covered swimming pool, perfect for bad weather days.

Porto Moniz is proud of its natural and architectonic heritage, with monuments such as the 17th century Mother Church, or the Santa Maria Madalena Church, or even the São João Baptista Fort that houses nowadays the Madeira Aquarium.

The natural heritage presents unique places, with an unique neauty, from where one can access the famous Madeira “Levadas” that explore the amazing Laurissilva Florest, classified by UNESCO as Wordl Mundial Heritage, built all over the centuries for the rain waters good use in order to irrigate this geographically difficult relief. In the Proto Moniz region one can access several Levadas, such as the Ribeira da Janela, Cedros or the 25 Fontes ones, allowing unique moments of contact with nature.

Ribeira de Odeleite

Odeleite is a peaceful small village in the lovely Castro Marim departments, by the bank of the beautiful Odeleite stream, situated in a place of beautiful natural landscapes.
This is the “other” Algarve, filled with charisma and beauty, distant from the tourist beaches of golden sand and close to a low altitude charming mountain side.

The village is characterized by its small white houses that descend a small slope towards the banks of the streamlet, surrounded by a great natural beauty, as one can observe in the Viewpoint in the top of the slope, from where one can observer the gorgeous pond of the Odeleite dam.
In fact, the construction of this dam endowed the region with astonishing landscapes, beyond all the other improvements.

Odeleite is proud of its lovely 16th century Mother Church, of the interesting communitarian kilns and all the other many rural and mountain side heritage that can still be found.

The village has maintained its traditions throughout the centuries, as one can observe in the wonderful and typical basketry items.

Vidigueira

Vidigueira is a calm and peaceful village on the typical plain landscape of the Alentejo region, in the South of Portugal, in an area filled with fruit trees fields, orchards and specially, famous wine production.
The vestiges of human occupation in this area are ancient, however Vidigueira only has official documents that relate it as a locality since the 13th century.
The development of this mainly agricultural village was made mostly due to the quality of the wine here produced, already famous in the 15th century.
Vidigueira has several interesting buildings, such as the remaining of its Castle, the 17th century Misericórdia Church with beautiful 18th century glazed tiles, the nossa Senhora das Relíquias Convent (situated at about 2km from the centre of the village, and built in 1493), the São Pedro Chapel and its viewpoint with a astonishing view over the Alentejo Plain, and the interesting Municipal Museum, with a local ethnographical collection.
In Vidigueira’s surroundings there are several testemonies of ancient human occupation, such as the Corte Serrão Anta, the São Cucufate Roman Villa Ruins, or the Zambujal and Monte da Cegonha Roman Ruins.

Sesimbra

Sesimbra has clearly the traditional ambiance of a sea people village. A walk through the narrow and steep traditional Sesimbra streets allow us to observe all that charm by the many ocean motifs that decorate houses, also the fishing net presence and other fishing arts, among many other details.
In Sesimbra’s downtown one can have pleasant walks in the seaside road and walk, along with the ocean inviting for lovely swims in the calm crystalline waters or only for pure contemplation.
The large restaurant variety quite close to the beach also allows us to taste the best the Sesimbra’s Gastronomy has to offer. The freshest sea and shell food recipes are available all the time.
Nearby is located the astonishing Cape Espichel, offering amazing landscapes, showing off the breathtaking power of nature.
