🌊 Hoje, o oceano tem uma história para contar.

Esta tarde, a luz vai mudar. O ar poderá arrefecer ligeiramente. Durante alguns minutos, a natureza vai viver algo parecido com um anoitecer antecipado.

Sabemos o que esperar no céu. Sabemos que o eclipse não provocará marés extraordinárias e que a temperatura do oceano praticamente não se alterará.

Mas há uma pergunta para a qual a ciência ainda não tem uma resposta clara:

E os golfinhos? 🐬

Irão reagir à mudança repentina de luminosidade?
O seu comportamento vai alterar-se?
Ou vão simplesmente continuar a ser golfinhos?

Não sabemos.

E é precisamente por isso que hoje vamos observar. 🌒🌊

🌊 Today, the ocean has a story to tell.

This afternoon, the light will change. The air may cool slightly. For a few minutes, nature will experience something resembling an early sunset.

We know what to expect in the sky. We know the eclipse won’t create extraordinary tides and that ocean temperature will barely change.

But there’s one question science still can’t clearly answer:

What about the dolphins? 🐬

Will they respond to the sudden change in light?
Will their behaviour change?
Or will they simply carry on being dolphins?

We don’t know.

And that’s exactly why today, we’ll be watching. 🌒🌊

Dolphins don’t swim alongside boats by chance.

Using echolocation, they produce tiny clicks that allow them to “see” the world around them by detecting the distance, direction, and even the shape of objects.

That’s why they can approach boats with incredible precision.

🐦 Not all of the ocean’s stars live beneath the surface.

The Cory’s shearwater (Calonectris borealis) is one of the Atlantic’s most iconic seabirds. It spends most of its life far out at sea, returning to land only to breed.

Its long, narrow wings allow it to glide effortlessly for hours, using the wind to travel across the ocean.

Next time you spot one flying just above the waves… remember you’re watching a true master of the Atlantic.

🌊 O vento pode mudar muito mais do que o estado do mar.

Quando sopra a nortada, a camada superficial da água é empurrada para o largo. Em resposta, águas profundas, frias e ricas em nutrientes sobem até à superfície, num fenómeno conhecido como upwelling.

É este processo invisível que alimenta o fitoplâncton, sustenta os cardumes e ajuda a atrair golfinhos, aves marinhas e tantas outras espécies.

Na natureza, nada acontece por acaso. Tudo está ligado. 💙

🌊 The wind can change much more than the sea state.

When the nortada—the prevailing northerly wind along Portugal’s west coast—blows, it pushes the surface waters offshore. In response, cold, nutrient-rich water rises from the depths in a natural process known as upwelling.

This invisible process feeds phytoplankton, supports schools of fish and helps attract dolphins, seabirds and many other marine species.

In nature, nothing happens by chance. Everything is connected. 💙

O Canhão da Nazaré é um verdadeiro gigante subaquático. Ao transportar águas profundas ricas em nutrientes para junto da superfície, alimenta um ciclo de vida que atrai peixes, aves marinhas, golfinhos, tartarugas e, por vezes, até baleias.

É por isso que cada saída para o mar é muito mais do que um passeio.

É uma oportunidade para testemunhar um ecossistema único, onde a natureza continua a escrever a sua própria história.

Nazaré’s greatest secret isn’t the waves. It’s hidden beneath the ocean. 🌊

Long before Nazaré became famous for its giant waves, nature had already created one of Europe’s most remarkable marine ecosystems.

The Nazaré Canyon is a true underwater giant. By bringing nutrient-rich deep waters closer to the surface, it fuels a rich food web that attracts fish, seabirds, dolphins, sea turtles and, from time to time, even whales.

That’s why every trip out to sea is so much more than a boat tour.
