🌟 Quiz Night Highlights at The Space, August 2nd 🌟

What a sendoff for the summer! On August 2nd, The Space in Oliveira do Hospital was packed to the rafters with quizzers. We even ran out of seats - more chairs are definitely on the list for autumn. The atmosphere was lively and full of community energy, with everyone ready for some good-natured competition.

This quiz night marked the introduction of the brand new Porteagle Trophy, adding a touch of prestige for the winners. Among the teams raising the stakes, the previous champions from Fourmidables and Make Cake not War formed a power alliance - setting the bar higher than ever.

Stealing the show, however, were “The Knowledge” (Will, Kate, and Steve) who actually showed up for Storytelling Night but found themselves in the quiz hot seat instead. Not letting it break their stride, they got right involved and, in an unexpected twist, scooped the Porteagle Trophy on a Viriato-themed tiebreaker from the Clueless crew. Sometimes, being in the right place at the right time really does pay off. As quizmaster there were a few questionable calls, I'll admit, but an Arctic Tern really does migrate 71000km or more!!

Quiz night is back this Saturday, August 2nd, and it’s a special one — the last quiz of the summer! 🌞🧠 Come mark the occasion with a bit of lighthearted competition and plenty of community spirit.

Had a brilliant day out on the Dolmen Mystery Tour with Miek, her daughter-in-law Chloe, and grandkids Laura (14) and Lloec (10) 🌿 This one was a last-minute booking, and sometimes those spontaneous plans turn out to be the most memorable.

My personal highlights were the Fairies’ Washbowls at the high point, sharing local legends and wondering where nature and human influence meet 🧚‍♂️and then ending at Viper Quarry where everyone dropped off their worries. If that place collects any more secrets, it’ll need its own diary 📖

The kids were fantastic, full of energy, up for scrambling over rocks, and especially keen on the grislier bits of our ancient history. Turns out, nothing grabs their attention quite like a tale of old-time mischief and torture 🗿

Last night’s quiz at the Space was another riotous success! I love seeing how much everyone enjoys it. There’s just something about a quiz that brings out everyone’s inner competitive hooligan (and yes, I see you, arguing passionately about continental boundaries).

As always, I love hosting these events because it lets me do what I enjoy most: storytelling, just with a side of fact-checking chaos. Special mention to the Raposas, who were absolutely convinced New Zealand was on the same continent as Australia 🌏🤔 Don’t worry, you weren’t alone, but Google says otherwise! Thankfully, my ever-glamorous assistant Joules was there to back me up with a stopwatch and a flurry of Google searches, or I might have started doubting myself.

The Fourmidables edged out a win in a closely fought battle 🏆 and everyone left with smiles (and maybe a few bruised egos). The next quiz will be the first week of August before we take a summer break while I pop back to the UK, so don’t miss your last chance to quiz with us until autumn!

What a treat it was to guide Sancha Gomes, Nick Pansen, and his dad Harold (visiting all the way from Lake Constance, Germany! 🇩🇪) on the latest Dolmen Mystery Tour. Every group brings their own spark, and this trio was no exception. ✨

One of the unexpected joys of this tour was the chance to brush up on the Germanic invasion of Portugal from the 5th to 7th centuries. Turns out, the Suebi, Vandals, and Visigoths weren’t just passing through. 🏰 They left their mark, especially in the names we still use today. Some of the most popular Portuguese surnames, like Gomes, are actually of Germanic origin. So if you meet a Gomes, you’re shaking hands with history! 🤝

Of course, the real magic happens when we peel back the layers of time and marvel at the dolmen sites our ancestors created in the 4th millennium BC. ⏳🪨 There’s something humbling about standing in the shadow of stones that have seen more history than any textbook could hold. Every tour, every guest, adds a new perspective and pushes me to learn more—so thank you, Sancha, Nick, and Dad, for inspiring me to keep digging. 🙏🔍

A quick heads-up: bike tours are currently unavailable (blame the summer sun ☀️ and a few stubborn tires 🚲💨). But don’t worry—the Sunset Tour is a fantastic option in these hot summer months. 🌅 Cooler air, golden light, and plenty of time to marvel at ancient mysteries without melting in the midday heat. 🧊
