People throw around "luxury travel," "curated travel," and "hidden gems" like they're the same thing. They're not.

Luxury is about the price tag. Thread count, ch*****ne on arrival, a name everyone recognizes.

"Hidden gem" travel is a bit of a myth these days — if enough people are posting about it, it's not hidden anymore. It's just less crowded, for now.

Curated is different. It's not about cost or secrecy — it's about someone doing the filtering for you. Walking a place with intention, meeting the people who actually make it what it is, skipping the stuff that exists only for tourists. It's less "no one else knows about this" and more "someone who actually cares picked this for you."

Save this for the next time someone tells you they found a hidden gem — ask them who introduced them to it.

Recently, a guest on our Made in Porto tour told me something I haven't stopped thinking about: She said that the tour made walking into these shops feel less intimidating — like you're already friends with the owner before you even say hello.

And it's so true. You can get a Google list of places to visit or an Instagram hit list of things you must not miss when in Porto. But very rarely do you get the chance to speak to the owners, hear their side of the story, understand why they do what they do, and most importantly have the time and space to ask your questions.

Porto-based food and travel writer, tour guide, and the person behind The Mindful Step — blah blah - that's just the official stuff.

Here are five things you may not know about me -

🔸 I'm a mum of three — including one wonderfully neurospicy kid who keeps me on my toes
🔸 I've been writing for others for a long time but am only just finding the courage to share my own voice
🔸 Also a self-taught chef, obsessive travel planner, and die-hard to-do lister
🔸I am insatiably curious — I want to know everyone's story, and I can't stop asking questions

And two words you'll (hopefully) never find associated with me or my work: "Expat" or "Hidden Gem". Both give me the ick, for very different reasons. 😂

The busy and central hub of the city. If you're looking for nightlife and a vibrant atmosphere, this is your place.

Once a bit rough, now a hip, up-and-coming area. This is where the cool kids live, with fantastic bakeries, restaurants, and coffee shops.

A quieter, more local area that still has the old Porto charm before gentrification. A great spot to live if you want a more authentic feel.

Creative, arty, and full of life.
