The Sanctuary of Fatima is a major Catholic pilgrimage site located in the small town of Fatima, Portugal. It is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, and is most famous for the reported apparitions of the Virgin Mary to three shepherd children in 1917.
The Sanctuary comprises several buildings and sites, including the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary, which was built in the 1920s and 1930s and contains the tombs of two of the children, Francisco and Jacinta. The Basilica of the Holy Trinity, built in the 2000s, can hold up to 8,000 people and is one of the largest Catholic churches in the world.
Other important sites in the Sanctuary include the Chapel of Apparitions, where the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared to the children, and the Via Sacra, a tree-lined avenue that leads to the Valinhos apparition site.
The Sanctuary of Fatima attracts millions of pilgrims each year, particularly on the anniversary of the apparitions, May 13th. It is considered one of the most important Catholic pilgrimage sites in the world.
