Portugal´s azulejos tell stories of centuries of art and architecture- from palaces to metro stations

Walking through Portugal is like walking through a painting… one tile at a time! The azulejo, as it is called in Portugal, is traditionally of arabic ancestry: al-zulayj (الزليج) referring to small polished stones that inspired mosaics.

Tiles have been part of this country for around 5 centuries and over the course of this time, the Portuguese turned them into glazed ceramic tiles, creating geometric patterns, everyday life scenes, and even historical portraits.

They grew in sophistication and techniques and nowadays are present in Monasteries, churches, Palaces, houses, street murals, walls, train stations and tons of other buildings.

As beautiful as they are practical, these tiles are waterproof and durable, making them perfect for Portugal’s hot summers and humid winters, protecting buildings from both heat and moisture.
