At Porto’s Boavista, the Monument to the Heroes of the Peninsular War honors the Portuguese and British resistance against Napoleon’s armies in the Iberian Peninsula between 1808 and 1814.
Designed by architect José Marques da Silva and sculptor Alves de Sousa, the monument symbolizes victory, sacrifice, and allied courage.
Its most striking image is the lion toppling the eagle: the lion represents England, whose soldiers supported Portugal, while the eagle stands for Napoleon’s empire.
