Fes, Morocco 🇲🇦

One of the world’s must-see spots: the Chouara Tannery of Fes, a view you can only find there — the oldest leather tannery in Morocco!

Behind every riad door 🚪 lies a secret oasis 🌴 — a breath of tranquility in the middle of the city 🌃 , and in Moroccan culture, a riad is a home 🏡 built around a garden — a reminder that life grows from the inside out ✨✨✨
How badly do you want to visit Moroccan riads now?😉

This week we are in Morocco meeting students with bright eyes and families who welcomed us into their homes.

It’s easy to fall in love with the landscapes and architecture here, but it’s the people who make a place unforgettable.

Every story shared over tea, every conversation, every laugh, gets us closer to our goal, building bridges and bringing people from very different backgrounds together to learn from one another.

In Córdoba, the Mezquita-Catedral stands as a masterpiece of Islamic architecture and a living testament to the city’s layered past.

Built as a mosque in the 8th century, transformed into a cathedral in the 13th, its red-and-white arches still reflect the soul of Al-Andalus, a place where art, faith, and history intertwined.

This week we are in , and last night we saw Flamenco in Granada, a tradition born from centuries of cultural blending.

Flamenco is more than performance; it is expression, resistance, and emotion carried through voice, guitar, and movement. Granada’s version is deeply local: shaped by Romani heritage, Andalusi melodies, and the stories of people who lived on the margins of history.

For ILYT, we don’t just see shows, we experience culture, memory, and the power of music to transmit history.

This week we are in Andalucía, spending time in Granada’s streets, where the city’s history is most alive.
Granada is a place best understood on foot. The narrow lanes of the Albaicín, the historical houses, the tiled fountains, and the views toward the Alhambra all reflect a city shaped by centuries of movement, migration, and exchange.
These streets hold the memory of Al-Andalus: the urban planning, the courtyards built for community, and the rhythm of daily life that continues today.
For us at ILYT, wandering through Granada is an exercise in observation, seeing how past and present coexist and how a city preserves its identity through architecture, craft, and atmosphere.

The earthquake continues to cause much suffering. I spoke with my guide friend, Latifa, in Amizmiz today. She and many others are still out on the streets as they wait for inspectors to tell them if it is safe to return to their homes--if they still have one. My returned Peace Corps friend, Elizabeth, who served in Amizmiz, still has her GoFundMe campaign going if you would like to help:

https://gofund.me/ab1184dd If you would like to contribute to help people in a place near Morocco's recent earthquake's epicenter, please donate here. This was set up by Elizabeth Jay Allouche, who was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Amizmiz. I know her and I trust funds will go where most needed.

I am aware of the earthquake which hit Morocco last night, 8 Sept. I have heard from mountain guide Latifa, from Amizmiz, near the epicenter. She is OK, but told me there is death and destruction all around. It is still too early to know how much damage has been done as access to mountain villages is still difficult. I am trying to contact friends and colleagues in the south of Morocco and hoping for the best. The images are shocking.
