Açores

O ano de 2015 anuncia-se grande para os Açores: acaba de ser declarado o destino turístico mais sustentável do mundo e no final de Março começam a receber voos de companhias low cost – a easyJet, primeiro, e logo em Abril a Ryanair, vão ligar o continente (a primeira desde Lisboa, a segunda também do Porto) a Ponta Delgada. Outras companhias dizem-se interessadas em entrar nessa rota e os Açores ficam mais perto do mundo — e, mais importante, dos portugueses, que nunca se conformaram com o custo dos voos de e para o arquipélago a meio caminho entre a Europa e os EUA. Se calhar, agora o grande desafio açoriano será preservar essa sustentabilidade que lhe mereceu a distinção, preservando o “verde” que o garantiu e que lhe vale o fascínio que exerce em quem vai ou apenas vê fotografias — o de um mundo perdido que, afinal, existe.

São Miguel continuará a ser a principal porta de entrada no arquipélago, onde cada ilha conjura a sua individualidade, nunca fugindo muito à matriz principal concedida pela natureza generosa, que a dotou de vegetação luxuriante ou vastos prados que a intervenção humana bordou de pedra, de lagos e lagoas verdes e azuis, quedas de água inesperadas. Cenários idílicos nutridos num coração vulcânico que nos dá geisers e crateras feitas espelhos de água e que sobe marcando as paisagens, bênção e maldição. E subir, subir, é mesmo o Pico, o ponto mais alto de Portugal, na ilha que Raúl Brandão considerou ser “a mais bela, a mais extraordinária” dos Açores. Mas, utilizando as suas palavras, cada uma das ilhas tem uma beleza que só a elas pertence — e são nove para descobrir, todas verdes, à sua maneira.

"Charming cottage with everything you'll need"

This is a great little house with traditional architecture and furnishings. It is in a central location and served as a home base for visiting all areas of the island. The kitchen is fully stocked with everything we needed. Great views of the rolling hills and ocean and plenty of privacy. The owner and caretaker were more than accommodating and very easy to reach before and during our stay. We highly recommend this property.

The cheese from the Azores is mostly from cow’s milk while the cheeses from the mainland are mostly from goat and sheep’s milk. This allowed Azoreans to master the craft and specialty and produce some of the best cheeses in Europe.
With rare exceptions, Azorean table wine is mostly sub-standard. Pico is the closest to have a wine that can compete with the average European wines. However the best casts quickly sell out.

São Jorge’s cheese, the sweet and juicy pineapples from Sao Miguel and the aperitif wine from Pico that once reached the table of the Czars, are all compulsory stopping places in a gastronomic itinerary of the Azores.

Vila Franca Islet

On your visit to Vila Franca do Campo, one of the archipelago’s key tourist centres, visit the islet of Vila Franca.

Located around one kilometre off the coastline, the islet came about following the collapse of a former volcano. Classified as a Nature Reserve, it is almost circular in shape but broken by a sea entrance through one section of its perimeter.

The crater walls are home to much local vegetation. Within, the beauty is compounded by the crystalline waters of the natural swimming pool that features its own stunning beach.The Vinha da Areia Beach is excellent for bathing and is equipped with all the facilities of a modern water-park.

To the south of the Islet stand two volcanic rock peaks used for nesting by the many marine birds that visit the island. Getting there is easy with a regular summer ferry service between Vila Franca do Campo and the Islet.
