[EN] During our tours, we come across other fascinating creatures that deserve our attention too.
On 14 October, we had a special encounter with the Portuguese man o’ war (𝘗𝘩𝘺𝘴𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘢 𝘱𝘩𝘺𝘴𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴), a marine organism belonging to the phylum Cnidaria. 🪼
Despite its delicate appearance and stunning colours, it has a surprising feature: a gas-filled float that allows it to remain at the surface. As a result, it cannot swim actively and is carried along by the wind and ocean currents. Sometimes, it can even wash up on our beaches.
Its name comes from the resemblance of its floating structure to the sails of the Portuguese caravels used during the Age of Discoveries. Its shades of blue, purple and pink make it even more unmistakable!
⚠️ But be careful: although it is beautiful, it should never be touched, as its tentacles can deliver a painful sting.
