🇬🇧On August 28th, 29th and 30th, Bolhas Tours documented consecutive sightings of short-finned pilot whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus) in the Sesimbra cetacean corridor.
Despite their common name, this species taxonomically belongs to the dolphin family (Delphinidae), standing as one of the largest members of this family, with adult males reaching impressive lengths of up to 7.2 meters and weighing around 4 tons.
On the 28th, the pod exhibited a surface-resting behavior known as “logging”, which is ideal for the group’s energy recovery. However, this surface lethargy contrasts with its extraordinary hydrodynamic capabilities, as evidenced by the impressive bursts of speed it can achieve during deep dives to capture prey.
These consistent encounters not only validate our historical records from the past 5 years—occurring during the exact same period and within the same area—but also reinforce the scientific value of monitoring the Portuguese coast.
The now-proven recurrent occurrence of Globicephala macrorhynchus at such northern latitudes constitutes a new and crucial scientific data point for studying the biogeographical distribution and migratory dynamics of these cetaceans in the North Atlantic.
