Corsica is the largest island in France and one of the most diverse. There’s a trendy dining and nightlife scene here, with top chefs churning out gourmet creations. However, its magic seeps from idyllic half-moon bays, verdant valleys, charming hilltop villages and the Corsican way of life that’s unique to the island. You’ll find it within local delicacies, like azimu (fish stew) and the sounds of polyphonic songs.

Adventure-seekers are well catered for, with everything from snorkelling and boat trips to hiking and canyoning.

Laze on the picture-perfect shoreline of Saleccia, one of the most stunning French island beaches. And you can’t leave without touring the vineyards that surround much of the island, some of which cling to terraces above the sea. Ah, Bora Bora. The stuff of dreams. As you arrive by plane, the view says it all. How not to be mesmerised by this stunning palette of sapphire, indigo and turquoise, all mixed together in modern-art abstractions? And these sand-edged motu (islets) and soaring rainforest-covered basaltic peaks? With such a dreamlike setting, Bora Bora is, unsurprisingly, a honeymooners’ choice. But there’s much more to do than clink glasses with your loved one in a luxurious hotel.

The good thing is that you can mix slow-paced sun-and-sand holidays with action-packed adventures. Diving, snorkelling, lagoon tours, hiking and parasailing are readily available. What you shouldn’t expect, though, is a thriving nightlife. Bora Bora is a quiet island. And this dream destination is much more accessible than you think. As well as five-star resorts, a handful of low-key midrange hotels beckon.

'Vegas of China'
Macau is indeed an epicentre of gambling and glitz. While luxury entertainment here is world-class, the city has much more to offer than that. Macau was a Portuguese colony for 300 years, a history marked by a cultural hybridity that manifests itself in all aspects of life: Chinese temples stand on maritime-themed Portuguese tiles; the sound of Cantonese permeates streets with Portuguese names; and when you're hungry, it could be Chinese dim sum, pastéis de nata (Portuguese egg tarts) or Macanese minchi (ground meat stir-fried with potatoes) that come to the rescue.

Macau Peninsula holds the Unesco World Heritage–crowned old city centre. Further south are the former islands of Taipa and Coloane, joined together by a strip of reclaimed land named Cotai. Taipa has lovely Macanese houses and quaint boutiques; Cotai hosts the new megacasinos; while Coloane is a laidback village with shipyards and beaches.

Welcome to Spiti
Separated from fertile Lahaul by the soaring 4551m Kunzum Pass, the trans-Himalayan region of Spiti is another chunk of Tibet marooned within India, a kind of 'mini-Ladakh' with fewer tourists. The scattered villages in this serrated moonscape arrive like mirages while the turquoise-grey ribbon of the Spiti River is your near-constant companion, albeit sometimes way below in precipitous gorges.

The whole Spiti–Kinnaur loop is scenically spectacular, attracting hordes of summer motorcyclists completing one of India's great road trips.
