Driven by the desire to put Romania on the map of tourism for people with disabilities, we created Accessible Romania by Sano Touring, a travel agency that makes adventure and discovery accessible for all of us. With each tourist we welcome at Otopeni Airport in Bucharest or elsewhere in the country, we learn something new about accessible tourism – a special, challenging and rewarding field. We c

ould not have reached this point without a team of great professionals who joined and supported our vision.

Access can be this simple. A small ramp, a moment of independence, and a warm welcome. Simple changes like this open doors, literally and figuratively, for wheelchair users, older adults, and anyone who needs a smoother way in.

Here at Accessible Romania, we know all the top spots to visit, where accessibility doesn’t need to be a concern 😉

[Image Description: A man in a wheelchair pushes himself up a short ramp leading into the entrance of a church. The ramp is concrete and gently sloped, blending into the doorway. The church has a large wooden door and steps on either side of the ramp.]

Oh, how we love the famous "Blue" Danube. This iconic river winds its way through ten countries, including our beloved Romania. Now, we invite you to join us for a conversation about how inclusive tourism is shaping development and investment across this remarkable region.

The panel, hosted by Tourism 4.0 and moderated by our friend Urška Starc Peceny, will take place from 2 to 3 June 2025 at Hotel Terme Vivat in Slovenia.

The panel will offer real-world insights from a fantastic lineup of guests, including our very own Cristina Căluianu, who will represent Accessible Romania by Sano Touring in the conversation on best practices from across Europe. Cristina will be joined by Eleonora Censorii, CEO of Destination Everywhere Accessible Travel, who will share Italy’s key role in the region and highlight the strong tourism connections with Danube-touched countries like Slovenia and Croatia.

Explore 3 fun, fascinating, and wheelchair-accessible spots that prove Romania’s capital is opening its doors to everyone:

✅ Grigore Antipa Museum of Natural History – One of Romania’s finest museums, where nature and science come alive! Visitors of all abilities can marvel at dinosaur skeletons and explore Romania’s ancient biodiversity. Since 2012, accessibility has been a top priority, with ramps, adapted restrooms, and a ground floor designed for wheelchair users. Sensory-friendly features make the experience even more inclusive.

✅ Herastrau Park – Once a marshy stretch of land, this 74-hectare green oasis was transformed in 1936 around the lakes of the Colentina River. Now the city’s largest and most popular park, it offers smooth, step-free paths, accessible restrooms, and boat rides. Located in a posh part of Bucharest and home to unique vegetation like Tagore’s oak, Herastrau is perfect for a relaxing day outdoors.

✅ Romanian Athenaeum – One of Europe’s most iconic concert halls and proud holder of the European Heritage Label (2024). Designed by French architect Albert Galleron, its heritage status limits structural changes, but a lift is available to assist guests with reduced mobility in reaching seats in the Grand Auditorium. Arriving 30 minutes early is recommended, and guests must be able to exit independently or with assistance in an emergency. Please note that overall, the Romonian Athenaeum, whilst manageable by some, is not well known for its accessibility.

Bucharest is moving toward greater inclusion—step by step, ramp by ramp. Come and experience it for yourself! 💙♿️

Did you know? The legendary vampire Count Dracula was partly inspired by a real historical figure! Vlad III, nicknamed Vlad the Impaler, was a 15th-century prince of Wallachia (in present-day Romania). He ruled with a fierce hand and defended his homeland against the Ottoman Empire’s expansion. His strict (and often harsh) methods of justice earned him a fearsome reputation, even as many in Romania remember him as a hero who protected his people.

Vlad’s family name was Dracula, meaning “son of Dracul” (Dragon). Bram Stoker, the author of the classic novel Dracula, borrowed this name for his famous vampire character. The chilling tales of Vlad’s cruelty and bravery helped inspire Stoker’s story, though the fictional Count Dracula is far more supernatural! In reality, Vlad the Impaler was not a vampire, but a determined (if brutal) ruler fighting for his land. His life and legend have become intertwined, making Vlad an enduring figure in both history and folklore.

[Image Description: A classic painted portrait of Vlad the Impaler, a 15th-century Romanian prince, shown from the shoulders up. He has long, dark curly hair, a thick mustache, and wears an elaborate red and gold outfit with a fur collar. On his head is a tall red velvet hat adorned with pearls and a large jeweled brooch featuring a red stone and golden starburst. The background is dark, making his facial features and ornate clothing stand out. The text at the bottom reads: “The Legend of Count Dracula.” In the top-right corner is the logo for Accessible Romania by Sano Touring.]

Travel Tips: Plan an Accessible Romania Trip 💼

Travel like a pro: Here are 5 tips for exploring Romania accessibly:

1️. Plan Ahead: Many top attractions have accessible features – research museums, hotels, and transport in advance. (Hint: Accessible Romania can handle this for you! 😉)

2️. Mind the Terrain: Old cities have cobblestones and hills (e.g. Sighișoara’s citadel is steep). Service your wheelchair ahead of time so you know it’s as ready as it can be for a little ruggedness. Though our guides are on hand to help!

3️. Accessible Transport: Book adapted transport early. We offer an adapted van out of Bucharest for tours, which is great because public accessible transit can be limited in smaller towns.

4️. Local Support: Don’t speak Romanian? No problem! Most Romanians in cities speak some English and are friendly – they’ll help if you ask. Learn “Mulțumesc” (“Thank you”) to charm the locals.

5️. Take Your Time: Savor the journey! Romania’s scenic spots (think rolling hills of Covasna or lakes of Sovata) are best enjoyed at a relaxed pace. Many spa resorts in these areas are disability-friendly, perfect for unwinding.

Between them are yellow and green buildings leading toward the iconic Clock Tower in the center, with its pointed spire and historic clock face under a bright blue sky.
