Designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, this perfectly intact 16th century gem with nine towers, cobbled streets, burgher houses and ornate churches rivals the historic streets of Old Prague or Vienna for atmospheric magic. It is also the birthplace of Vlad Dracula, also known as Vlad Tepes (Vlad the Impaler), ruler of the province of Walachia from 1456 to 1462.
It was he who inspired Bram Stoker's fictional creation, Count Dracula.

In the villages near Bran, there is a belief in the existence of evil spirits called ghosts or โ€œsteregoiโ€ (a variant of โ€œstrigoiโ€). Until half a century ago, it was believed that there existed certain living people โ€“ โ€œstrigoiโ€ โ€“ who were leading a normal life during the day but at night, during their sleep, their souls left their bodies and haunted the village tormenting people in their sleep. These evil spirits haunt their prey from midnight until the first cockcrow, when their power to harm people faded. โ€œThe undead [i.e., ghosts, vampires] suffer from the curse of immortality,โ€ writes Stoker, โ€œthey pass from one period to another, multiplying their victims, augmenting the evil in the worldโ€ฆโ€ The Dracula character derives from these local myths.

On the coat of arms of the Corvinus family there is a crown that holds in its beak a gold ring. Assigning this family symbol has a legend. It is said that John of Hunedoara was an illegitimate son of Sigismund of Luxembourg, king of Hungary, with a beautiful woman from the Land of Hateg, named Elizabeth.

To protect her from dishonesty, the king gives husband one of her valiant men, Voicu, giving him a ring as well as for the unborn baby, in order to be recognized when she grows up and goes to the royal court. During a voyage made by Voicu's family, standing for lunch, the ring is forgotten on the edge of the towel on which the meridians were placed. A raven, attracted by the brilliance of the ring, steals him by trying to leave with him. Child John of Hunedoara takes a bow and turns the raven, thus recovering the ring. When he grows and reaches the royal court, he tells this patina, and the King, impressed by this history, decides that the symbol of the Hunedore family is the rag with a gold ring in his beak.

Besides, the family name comes from the Latin "Corvus", which means "Corb", a bird that symbolized something else in the Middle Ages, namely wisdom and longevity.

The wooden churches in MaramureลŸ give a sentimental and spiritual value that is very different to the cultural dowry of Romania. Eight out of the dozens of places of worship that surround Historic Maramures have been included since 1999 in the UNESCO World Heritage. It's beginnings are linked to the end of the great plague, which haunted the area at the beginning of the 18th century, so that in 1711, in the place called the Monk's Hair, the construction of a place of worship began as a thanksgiving to God for the protection against the plague
