This church in Bucharest has faceless saints, and it’s not for the reason you think.

The truth might go even deeper, and it involves faith itself.

Built in 1724, this church stands from a time when Romania was under Ottoman rule.

Back then, the written language was Cyrillic, and religious texts were in Greek.

It was also a period of artistic growth, this church reflects the Brâncovenesc style perfectly.

The faceless saints? They’re tied to Ottoman invasions.

Sometimes soldiers would enter and vandalize churches, erasing the saints’ faces.

Today, the church keeps them as they are, a reminder of endurance through hardship.

• February 1929: Down to –30.2°C, with massive blizzards and enormous snowdrifts across the city.

• February 1954: Around –25°C, accompanied by record-breaking blizzards, winds up to 126 km/h, and extreme snowfall.

“Why are there so many cats in Bucharest? Are locals cat people?”

It’s one of the first things our tourists notice.
Not stray dogs. Cats. Everywhere.

And they’re not wrong. Romania ranks #1 in the EU for cat ownership.

Almost 48% of households have at least one cat.

Why? During the pandemic, adoptions exploded.
People stayed home. Cats fit the rhythm.

So yes, walk Bucharest long enough, and you’ll hear a meow more often than you think.

Happy Birthday to Marius Burda, co-founder of BTrip Bucharest.

He loves photography, swimming, and giving Bucharest a voice through its stories.

“I started this project 8 years ago because I wanted Bucharest to be known and tourists to truly understand its stories. That drive is still alive today. Bucharest is a peculiar city that needs to be discovered.”
