PHOTO TOUR “BACK IN TIME”

My proposal for you it’s to get in the amazing ancient world of Bucovina and live for a few days in the middle of the Hutsuls population and make contact with their occupations. And, of course, take a lot of pictures with unchanged subjects in the last 100 years.

Bucovina is located in Northern Romania and it’s a land full of history. Belonging to the Moldavians (Romanian population in this area), Bucovina was occupied by the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1775 till 1918. In that time, Bucovina was hardly influenced by the German culture and knows a flourishing economical growth. That’s why this part of territory is obviously different then the other part of Romania. Half of the Bucovina was returned to Romania in 1918 and the rest belongs nowadays to Ukraine.

The name of Bucovina comes from the German name of beech trees, Buche – Buk, and means “The Land of the beech trees”. That because the main part of Bucovina is laying on forest hills. On this land there is an ancient population – The Hutsuls. Nobody knows where they came from, but for sure it was a nomadic population in the mountains and forests. They’ve settled in Bucovina and they live, even today, on the heights. Their main occupations were cattle breeding and woodworking. They also have strong ethnic traditions, which they keep it alive until today. Another brand mark of the Hutsuls are the mountain horses that they used in the forest. The Hutsuls Horses are now a distinctive breed that is growth in Lucina Stud.

SLEEPING IN THE BUCOVINIAN COTTAGE

Your trip in Romania includes 3 nights of accommodation in the Bucovinian Village located in Suceava county. There are 7 original Hutsuls’ cottages, old from 150 years ago, but completely renovated. Each cottage has 2 or 3 beds and is decorated with genuine things from ancient times. The only changes made nowadays are the central heating and a bathroom for each room (with toilet and shower).

During of the 4 days of stay in Bucovinian Village you can take photos from all the interiors and exteriors of the 7 cottages. Also, you will meet, in the main cottage, two craftswomen, especially invited for you. They will weave at an ancient machine and will paint eggs in a traditional way.

History. The cottage is specific to a more distant period in time. Is very simply built, but it was once very functional, as it used to comprise a very strong essence of the family life. In the ethno-cultural space of Bucovina there are various evolutions in what architecture is concerned, i.e., the house with an unheated room, a living room and later with a supply chamber.
Later on, in the eighteenth century, when a German population settles here, the houses slowly transform into functional living spaces with two rooms. Also, the Hutsuls started building an open porch to their houses, in order to protect the entrances from the weather elements, or to relax and rest.

HUTSUL – THE GUN HORSE

The Hutsuls stud horse Lucina was founded in 1856, under the command of an Austrian colonel. This horse breed was popular within the Austrian Army, in machine guns companies, because of the exceptional abilities to slip on mountain path, on the edge of the precipice, but also because the abilities to carry heavy weights, not demanding special conditions of feeding. From its founding until 1914, Lucina stud belonged to Austro-Hungarian Empire. After the 1st war, Romania was invited to the last auction held in Austria, where it bought Lucina Stud and 150 heads of stallions.

Today, Lucina Stud has a territory of 1770 hectars and 380 horses.
