A recent private journey through Romania with our guide Claudia turned into something much more than a sightseeing tour.

The route took our guests from Bucharest across the spectacular Transfăgărășan, then through Sibiu, Mediaș, Sighișoara, Viscri and Brașov, before finishing with Peleș Castle and Cantacuzino Castle.

For one of our travellers, this trip also had a personal meaning. Her grandfather had emigrated to the United States from somewhere in what is now Romania, but without leaving clear traces of the exact place he came from. So this became, in a way, a journey of exploration and reconnection.

Along the way came some unforgettable moments: the dramatic landscapes of the Transfăgărășan, the medieval atmosphere of Sibiu and Sighișoara, the fortified church of St. Margaret in Mediaș, a stop in Viscri, local flavours, a taste of pălincă, and of course… a very close encounter with a bear near the road.

At Peleș Castle, careful timing helped create one of those special private-tour moments: fewer crowds, more time to enjoy the details, and a much more relaxed visit. Afterwards came lunch with beautiful views over the Bucegi Mountains and a w**e tasting on the terrace of Cantacuzino Castle in Bușteni.

Romania was only one part of a wider European journey for our guests, but we were very happy to hear that it exceeded their expectations.

And this is exactly what we love about private travel: combining Romania’s history, landscapes, food and local stories with the flexibility to make each journey personal.

Behind every experience is a story, and at ZumZum, it’s a family story that has been growing since 1984.

What began with Reinhardt Liviu’s first steps into beekeeping has become a tradition carried forward by the next generation. Today, Franziska, Laurențiu, Ciprian and their family welcome travellers into their apiary in Lovnic, Transylvania, to discover the world of bees up close.

The experience is about much more than honey. Guests learn how a working apiary functions, why bees are so important to the ecosystem, and what it means to preserve a family tradition while sharing it with others.

A journey through Romania, one trail at a time.

For our travelers, this 14-day private journey was not simply about visiting Romania’s highlights, but about experiencing the country at their own pace - walking through its landscapes, meeting its history up close, and spending time in places that are often missed on a faster itinerary.

After discovering Bucharest and heading into the Carpathians, their journey became increasingly active. They hiked among the dramatic limestone ridges of Piatra Craiului, before continuing into rural Transylvania, where the scenery changed completely: rolling hills, forests, meadows and centuries-old Saxon villages.

From Viscri, they followed sections of the Via Transilvanica, crossing the peaceful countryside on foot and experiencing a much slower side of Romania. Along the way came fortified churches, traditional villages and places such as Biertan, where history still feels very much part of the landscape.

And towards the end of the journey, the scenery became more dramatic again. In the Fagaras Mountains, they hiked above Balea Lake, surrounded by some of the highest and most impressive peaks in Romania - a fitting finale to a trip that combined culture, history and several memorable days on the trails.

What we especially love about these photos is that they show the journey as it really happened: not just the places, but our travelers moving through them, stopping to take in the views, following the trails and discovering Romania step by step.
