May 24 – the Day of Slavic Writing and Culture in Russia 📜
If you’ve ever been on our free tours, you should remember the monument we’re meeting at – two brothers Cyril and Methodius. More than 1000 years ago they created the first alphabet for Slavs. The Cyrillic alphabet became the basis for many languages – Bulgarian, Serbian, Belarusian, Ukrainian – and, of course, Russian.
So, let’s commemorate this notable day by learning a few useful words in Russian!
We think, you should know, how to say “hi” in Russian? It’s quite simple – Privet! It’s an informal way to greet someone here.
But if you want to use official “hello” – you should try to pronounce “zdrávstvujte”, which literally means “be healthy” or “wish you health”. It’s not a word that rolls off the tongue, is it? 😵
How are you? – Kak dela?
Good – Kharasho.
Thank you – Spasibo.
Vodka shot is vodka shot everywhere in the world 😁 But if you want to say “cheers!” to your Russian friends – try to say “za zdarovie!”, which again means “to your health”.
And now for curse words 😉 The most common Russian curse word is “Blin!”, which is translated as… “Pancake!” Actually, it’s not considered to be rude at all and you can use it to show the whole range of emotions: surprise, annoyance, disappointment…
For example:
Blin (ehh/uhh/ohh), why you did it? 😧
Blin (Damn/Why/Wow), today is Sunday! 😃
I want to eat a blin (a pancake) 🥞😋
We hope, you've learned some useful phrases and now ready to come to Moscow 😊
