Russian Week in London – Festival Maslenitsa 2017
19 – 26 February www.maslenitsa.co.uk
CELEBRATE SPRING THE RUSSIN WAY
Established in 2009, London’s vibrant Maslenitsa Festival returns in February for a week of celebration and activities throughout the capital. Maslenitsa – often loosely translated as ‘pancake week’ – is a well-loved tradition in Russia to mark the beginning of spring, and now it’s a popular annual fixture here too – perfect for chasing away the winter blues and to experience the best of Russian culture and heritage.
This year’s festival is a veritable feast for all the senses (and of course there’ll be plenty of opportunities to taste delicious blini pancakes). Highlights include: screenings of the latest films by Russia’s leading directors Renata Litvinova (The Goddess) and Pavel Lungin (The Queen of Spades); Maslenitsa culinary extravaganzas by well-known Russian restaurateur Alexey Zimin at Zima restaurant (a Festival partner); the best new and classic short films from Eastern Europe; original home-cooked soul food; live performances and music from DJs Max Reinhardt and Mourrka; a show and talk by top milliner Maria Zherebtsova; and the launch of the new album Long Lost Home by the award-winning songwriter Daria Kulesh. Music lovers will also be treated to a concert by inspirational folk singer Timur Dzeitov – People’s Artist of Russia and Ingushetia – and everyone will enjoy the nail-biting final of the ‘Stars of Albion’ talent competition! The winner will take part in a superb Maslenitsa celebration concert at Cadogan Hall, performing alongside artists of international standing such as violinists Natalia Lomeiko and Yuri Zhislin, pianist Olga Balakleets and accordion player Iosif Pouritz, with additional appearances by Daria Kulesh and Timur Dzeitov. They’ll be joined by the London and Brighton Russian Choir, the Natalia Kremen Ballet School, the Russian Souvenir Ensemble, internationally acclaimed vocal group KVATRO and the Moscow State Dance Ensemble Russian Seasons – together creating an unforgettable evening of dance and music from classical to crossover. Concert-goers will also be able to sample the delights of the ‘Maslenitsa Fair’ in the foyer before the show.
