Discovered and inhabited from the very old times, Kizhi Island is a great museum of traditional Russian architecture that one needs to visit and see during his trip to Russia. The island has always been recognized as the land of genuine masters. Once there lived painters and poets who taught new generations. Here the famous 'byliny' (folk tales) about Ilya Muromets and Vladimir the Red Sun were composed... Once you get on the island you instantly start to feel its ancient atmosphere and unbelievable liberty.

Kizhi graveyard had been created for 150 years from the early 1600's by several generations of skilled carpenters with no single draft or scheme! This place should definitely be put on your must-visit list.

Finding yourself in Kizhi you will hardly believe these are not genuine decorations from an old-Russian folk tale. But all the constructions here are real! The central place of the whole composition is the 22-dome Church of the Transfiguration - one of the most impressive examples of the world wooden architecture.
