🍲 Cabbage soup (Shchi)
Shchi is a cabbage soup that dates back to the 11th century ☝ The list of ingredients includes meat, seasonings and a dressing of sour cabbage pickle. However, the components may vary depending on the type of boiling (lean, fish, green), and culinary arts of the chef – many Russians prepare this soup using their own recipes!

Shchi is eaten with rye bread, dressed with sour cream or spices. We recommend you to try this Russian national dish! 😉

WHAT DO GUESTS OF ST PETERSBURG TAKE PICTURES OF?
There are lots and lots of picturesque places in the Northern capital of Russia, however, there are views that are more popular😍 than others! If you don’t have photos with them, no one is going to believe that you’ve been to St Petersburg!😉

Here are some spots that you will definitely want a picture of:
📸 Peter and Paul’s Fortress
Being the very heart and the very beginning of St Petersburg, this is quite a remarkable place. The spire of the Peter and Paul’s Cathedral is the highest point of the city centre and one of the landmarks! The typical postcard picture is the cathedral spire caught between the two halves of the Palace Bridge going up.

📸 Savior on the Spilled Blood
This is one of the most beautiful cathedrals in St Petersburg, and also one of the most “Russian” construction in this very European city. This church looks like a stone flower, and its other peculiarity is that it is built right on the canal. When you look at it, it seems like the building is floating!

📸 Palace Square.
You cannot possibly visit St Petersburg without taking a picture of its main square and the building with the longest facade in Europe – the General Staff Building, which was recently restored and is now housing the Impressionist collection of the Hermitage!

📸 St Isaac’s Cathedral
This is the fourth biggest cathedral in Europe, so there is absolutely no chance you can miss it. It is photographed from all possible angles, in all seasons and at all times of the day, so there are millions of pictures with this view. The most popular one would probably be the shot made from the St Isaac’s square, from under the monument to Nicholas I – look for the horseman in the centre!

😋 Pastille 😋
Pastille is a traditional Russian sweet that has been known since the 14th century ☝ Its shape and texture is resemblant of marshmallow, but has its own unique taste. Originally it was made of Antonovka apples, which grew only in Russia. Since the 19th century, this exclusive Russian dessert has been exported to Europe. Later pastille was made from other varieties of apples and berries. Later honey and subsequently sugar became an important component!

Before the 1917 Revolution, Kolomenskaya, Rzhevskaya and Belevskaya sorts of (puffed) pastille were especially popular 😍 Today, the manufacture of pastille was resurrected according to the old recipes. All sorts of pastille may be bought in Russian stores! 😉

✨ Saint Alexander Nevsky Lavra ✨
Founded by Peter the Great in 1710, this orthodox monastery is the most important ☝ in St. Petersburg

🔸Alexander Nevsky Laura is an Orthodox monastery at the eastern end of Nevsky Prospekt. It is the first and the largest monastery of the city. The place for the construction of the Alexander Nevsky Monastery was personally chosen by the Emperor Peter I in 1710. It was previously assumed that in this very spot Alexander Nevsky had defeated the Swedes in the Battle of the Neva in 1240. In 1713 the first wooden church of the future monastery - the Annunciation church - was laid upon the project of D.Trezzini. On the territory of the Alexander Nevsky Monastery there are several famous cemeteries where the members of the royal family, government and public figures, representatives of culture and art, are buried.

🔸In 1723 Peter I ordered to move the relics of Prince Alexander Nevsky from Vladimir to the new monastery. They arrived in St. Petersburg in 1724, and a new holiday - the Translation of the relics of Prince Alexander - was added to the calendar of the Russian Church. St. Alexander Nevsky, along with Peter I, is one of the patrons of St. Petersburg.
